I read the blog by Mike Varley of Black Mountain Cycles in Point Reyes Station.  Recently Mike linked to a Vimeo bio of Tom Ritchey.  It was done by "Jay Bird Films".  Not a big surprise to see that is Jay Ritchey of former Rivendell fame.  Go have a look if you are so inclined.  It gave me a smile:

Tom Ritchey was such a key figure in the start of mountain biking and a remarkable athlete. I didn't realize ( until I looked it up) that he is the same age as me. To have been building frames so early and so well is a true gift.
I still remember the '89  Worlds that Don Myrah won. I had just finished racing in the amateur race on the same course earlier in the day and was there to suck it all in. Although  at 10,000 ft you don't suck much air. Those were the good old days, rigid steel bikes and none of the panzy suspension stuff.

the video is very  well done too.

Leslie apparently one of those untold things at Rivendell. No one acknowledges it nor do that make a big deal about it.
I thought it was a big deal when I found out about it.

Makes you wonder what other interesting connections exist at RBW. Lot
of Bay Area bike people in that age bracket. Maybe a link between the
"woodsie" bike & some Rivs? Sounds like the same mission, i.e.,
versatility, off-road or on pavement. My Atlantis has never surprised
me off-road.

The part about the "woodsie" bike jump out to me.  Looks like grandfather to atlantis and with 650B wheels.  Never have heard a thing about a woodsie before this film.  Pretty cool.

John Finley Scott and the woodsie are an important part of the film "Klunkerz", which is a good documentary about the history of mountain biking:  http://www.klunkerz.com/

But I'll bet Jay could do an even better film about it.

Jim:

Thanks for the link. Lots of interesting stuff there that was new to
me. The trailer has some eye catching bike designs. Loads'o'fun to
watch.

Great documentary... I didn't realize Tom had built so many bikes at such a young age.  When I'm out visiting my friend near Santa Rosa, and we do our ride in Annadel State Park, I plan to take his old Ritchey Ascent (fully rigid) again... It's still an awesome bike some 27 years later.

And I think I need to sit down with a few exceptional beers and appreciate watching Klunkerz all over again this weekend.  BB

I came to this late, sometimes the combination of work, riding and other activities and responsibilities make it hard to follow all the threads here. So glad I looked into this threat. That was a great film, thanks for posting the link.
