Does anyone have contact info for Taylor Cruse, the rightful owner of this?

I sent him a message through flickr-   hopefully he'll get it.      The ebay listing says it's in Ohio, but I don't know if the original owner is in ohio or not-   any Ohioans here?    It would be great if someone could pounce on this douchebag.

Looks like the seller already parted out the SRAM levers that were on it:

I'm just a few towns over. His ad even seems sketchy as can be. Any luck getting ahold of the owner yet?

Seller seems to have an assortment of crap for sale.  Probably a pawn broker or guy that scours sales locally.  Doubtful he is the thief but selling stolen goods is still a crime. Best have original owner contact police before bike is gone forever.

Yep, this was mine, I'm in Columbus, Ohio, so I'm pretty close.

I very much appreciate the people that notified me about this. Going to try and get it back through official channels before doing anything crazy.

As much as an experiment as anything I wrote to the seller asking him about what size the bike for sale is.  S/He responded within just a few minutes:

Dear quality_trader,

Hello quality_trader, the frame is a smaller size, the rider was of a smaller stature (he stood at about 5'4"). I can get another measurement for you. 54-55cm is what we listed as the frame's size.

- salafikid

I am quality_trader.  So we can see that s/he is claiming to know the history of the bike.

Looks like this is a felony of the 5th degree under Ohio law (that is,
being in receipt of stolen property and having reasonable cause to
believe so).

2913.51 Receiving stolen property.
(A) No person shall receive, retain, or dispose of property of another
knowing or having reasonable cause to believe that the property has
been obtained through commission of a theft offense.

(B) It is not a defense to a charge of receiving stolen property in
violation of this section that the property was obtained by means
other than through the commission of a theft offense if the property
was explicitly represented to the accused person as being obtained
through the commission of a theft offense.

(C) Whoever violates this section is guilty of receiving stolen
property. Except as otherwise provided in this division, receiving
stolen property is a misdemeanor of the first degree. If the value of
the property involved is one thousand dollars or more and is less than
seven thousand five hundred dollars, if the property involved is any
of the property listed in section 2913.71 of the Revised Code,
receiving stolen property is a felony of the fifth degree. If the
property involved is a motor vehicle, as defined in section 4501.01 of
the Revised Code, if the property involved is a dangerous drug, as
defined in section 4729.01 of the Revised Code, if the value of the
property involved is seven thousand five hundred dollars or more and
is less than one hundred fifty thousand dollars, or if the property
involved is a firearm or dangerous ordnance, as defined in section
2923.11 of the Revised Code, receiving stolen property is a felony of
the fourth degree. If the value of the property involved is one
hundred fifty thousand dollars or more, receiving stolen property is a
felony of the third degree.

Amended by 129th General Assembly File No. 29, HB 86, § 1, eff.
9/30/2011.

Effective Date: 10-29-1999

Note that under this law, the ultimate purchasers of the frame and the
parts are not allowed to "retain" the property once informed that they
are the product of a theft.

Its also important to figure out if the original owner had ever claimed the loss on insurance.  Then the insurance company may need to be reimbursed or may take possession of any recovered property.

I did claim it, and replaced it with a Boulder Bicycle. If it's recovered I'll likely have to buy it back from the insurance company if I want it, I'm not sure how that amount is decided or anything like that, though.

The Columbus police have the auction info and are following up.

We'll see what happens!

Usually insurance buy-back is pretty inexpensive, so would be a good way to get it back. Then either have a new(!) bike or sell it to someone who would love and care for it.

Somewhat on topic but what insurance covers bikes? I dont own my house or own a car but do you think renter's insurance would cover it?  Living in brooklyn and all I usually rode beater bikes and didnt take too big a hit when they got swiped but if my Hilsen disappeared I would be out a big chunk of change. Does it matter that I bought it used? Thanks to anyone who is more of an adult than me here, haha.

Renter's insurance normally covers it. Call your agent and ask.

Homeowner's insurance also covers it - in my case I checked and they
cover the loss even if the bike is not at home when stolen.

Your renter's insurance should cover.  Possibly a clever insurer may try to carve out stolen bicycles and baby carts for New York area policies.  Check the policy language on theft.

One thing to make sure of is what type of coverage you have via renter's insurance. Some policies offer "replacement value," which covers you for the cost of replacing your bike with a like bike at current prices (minus deductible, of course). Other policies will only cover you for the initial cost of the bike minus depreciation (and deductible). The first type of policy is the one I prefer.

My second insurance policy is a secret, locked chamber *inside* my house where I store my bikes...

Oh mine all live inside,  much to my wife's chagrin, Haha.  But even with bars on the windows don't trust 100% that I won't get robbed so time to call USAA for some info.  Brooklyn isn't all bad just don't let people see you own anything too nice or ya might get robbed,  good times!

Please let us know how this turns out.

One question: how do you prove owner to the police or eBay?  Did you have to register your bike with the city?  Thanks!

I had submitted a police report with descriptions and serial numbers and all when everything was first stolen. Then, on top of that, for proof and insurance reasons, I keep documentation of receipts for all big purchases (easy now with emails), and pictures of the bike in various iterations.

I supposed if they really want proof I could send over my PBP pictures of me on the bike...

Annoyingly enough, the police have been incredibly slow following up about this, and at this point I'd be pretty sure it has either been sold or otherwise disposed of. If anyone sees anything matching this description pop up again, an email or post on the list would be appreciated.

I'd take a guess that the ebay seller may have realized it was stolen and ended the auction early without a sale. No feedback has been posted on the transaction.
