Aside from the paint and country of origin, are there any tangible differences (geometry, fork, tubing, etc) between the Quickbeam and SimpleOne? I've ridden a QB and liked it, but have never tested a SimpleOne so I don't know how they compare. That sale is tempting.

I think the tubing is a tad thicker which for me is good. (.9x.6x.9 as
opposed to .8x.5x.8) I love mine, it rides really nice and the paint
is understated and woodsy looking....perfect for a bicycle. Only $800
for the frame is a swingin deal. This frame can easily be used with a
hub geared wheel or even a deraileur set up with some compromises if
you wanted to do that.

IIRC, the rear spacing is 120mm. I suppose one could spring it to 126 to fit an old 5 or 6 speed, but I'm not sure that still qualifies as "easily".

Sturmey Archer hubs come in 120mm spacing, perfect for the Quickbeam. I have an S3X three-speed fixed hub on mine, and I've run an 8-speed SA hub as well. It's an easy conversion (once you get the wheel built) that doesn't involve changing the spacing of the dropouts.

You could use an old 120mm 5-speed, which can still be found.

Phil Wood freewheel hubs can be ordered with 120mm end caps for 5 speed use.
You can then buy new end caps to make the hub 130mm, a handy hub
for bob bikes.

Now is someone could put Suntour freewheels back into production we'd
be in business.

Eric how do you like the S3X ?
I'm looking for a hub gear that will stay in gear.

So far, so good with the S3X. I have this hub on two different bikes, and both are working fine. The only issue so far is that the hubs don't like to shift under a load. If you're already grinding up a hill, it's too late to shift (unless you can somehow soft pedal for a moment). Other than that, all is well. They are definitely a conversation starter.

Oh man. All this talk of "no-brainers" - You guys have my credit card finger starting to itch!

Does anyone know if a long reach caliper brake will work in front? I know the frame is designed for cantis but I kind of like the simplicity of a sidepull on a single-speed. I can always use the canti studs to mount a rack, so they're not just sittin' there.

Also, what's the max width tire that will fit on the "budget" SO wheels - a Mavic Open Sport rim I think?

Thanks,

Pete (SingleSixtySidepullSam)

I don't know about the brake. On my QB with Open Sport I'm currently running 700x40 Marathon Supremes, but I did run 700x50 Big Apples just fine.

Scratch that itch!

The SO has a kickstand plate where the QB has a tube, down between the chainstays, behind the bottom bracket. I think that's about it... I saw a sweet SO at Berkeley Bowl today, on my way home, with nice soft tape on moustache bars. It had the ginormous Wald basket and platracks to hold it up. I looked for someone inside, carting a large Sackville basket bag, but the crush of seasoned humanity was too great, I did not espy them.

All this talk of buying an $800 single-speed frame for its "versatility" in being able to be converted to a multi-geared derailleur bike is humorous to me. Everything about such a conversion on that frame would be a suboptimal hack. I think it would make a pretty nice single-speed.

Thanks, Jason. That's the best side-by-side comparison I've seen of
the Quickbeam vs the SimpleOne. For my part, the tangible differences
are a wash. I prefer the the SO's color and clearance, and my green
QB's lighter tubing and lack of doo-dads. I like the QB color, I just
like muddier colors better.

Great looking bike! And you're right -- at $800 it's a very good buy. If I didn't have a QB, I'd be getting a SO.

I think Charlie is right in that the Simpleone has very slightly
thicker tubing....but that doesn't really translate to a "tangible
difference" when riding for me.  I'm 150lbs.   I THINK my Simpleone
has a slightly more raked fork than the Quickbeam, but I'm not sure.
The Simpleone has fancier lugs than his Orange Quickbeam.  They both
seem to have the same geometry to the naked eye.  What is tangible for
me are the front fork rack eyelets and the four top-rack eyelets in
the back which not all Quickbeams have.  Also tangible for me means
having a kickstand plate which the QB doesn't.  Also, someone at Riv
will have to confirm, but it seems from looking at the bikes that tire
clearance is just a bit more on the Simpleone, but I haven't
measured.  I have been so happy I purchased the Simpleone.  It's set
up as a speedy drop-bar single speed and I love it that way, though
I'm sure I'll turn it into something else at some point, i.e. trail
bike, grocery bike, upright, geared....since it's so versatile.

For $800 it's a no-brainer.

FWIW, my Silver (last batch) QB has a kickstand plate...

Well, I scratched the itch, but I bought Matt's silver Quickbeam instead of an SO.

Can't wait for it to get here!

"Single Sixty Sidepull Sam" -- does this mean what I think it does? Photo? Gear? Your evaluation of it?

Patrick-

Not sure what you think it means ;-) but it's a 60cm Sam with sidepull brakes and a single top tube.
There was a thread a couple of months ago where some of us were trying to decipher all the various versions of Sam that are/were available.

I have a few not-so-great flickr photos here:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/ppesce/

As for evaluation, I don't have a lot of experience with many different bikes, so I can't offer much in the way of comparisons. I love its flexibility - I had it built a few different ways and currently have an SRAM Apex compact double drivetrain on it, for kicks. I was probably going to mess with again soon but the new-to-me QB will keep me distracted for a while.

"Single" refers to top tube; sorry, I thought it might refer to a single gear. I could see a ss Sam ...
