If you didn't see GP's column from yesterday, take a break and read it.

If you are moved to do so, take a moment or two and act.

As someone who had to visit the terminal ward in the hospital for a few years when my father in law was dying from I can attest that anything to brighten up the room or mood can be a huge lift.  I have some vintage NYC post cards I got recently, will do my best with a bike pic (I am an awful artist).  Like Grant I would recommend Hitchen's book to anyone dealing with losing a loved one to cancer, though he (Hitchens) would not have wanted anyone's "prayers", all things considered.  But all politics aside, great idea from G-man.

Jim, thanks for passing this along, and Grant, thanks for the post card idea. I went through the process of my wife dying from breast cancer and, yes, even the simplest things would serve to lift her spirits. I'm treating a patient now who has been an avid cyclist and is in the late stages of parkinson's. I suspect he gets at least as much "therapy" out of having someone to "talk bikes" with as he does from his actual physical therapy.

I've a few post cards sitting at the house; I think I'll draw a bike on one of them this evening. . .

Mailed today. My return address stamper includes an image of a bike. That was my picture. I also indulged my love of wet ink and added a few words.

Am I the only Riv-sort who doesn't own a postcard? I don't think I've ever purchased one in my 50 years. They would have them at Rite Aid, right?

Ah, thanks. I looked for those on the site last night, but somehow missed them. I need some pedals, too, so I'll get an order in tonight.

The post office had bicycle themed stamps a while back.  I'm using my favorite, the touring rider.

The best I could do for a riv-themed stamp was the USS Constitution, which kind of looks like the ship on the Atlantis head badge.

I also didn't have a postcard but I used a half of a plain greeting card, and sent it in an envelope today - with bike drawing of course (though my drawing has not advanced past 5th grade).

When I saw it Monday afternoon before leaving work, I jotted the address down on a sticky and stuck it in my shirt pocket, w/ a pen;  picked up my daughter from dance, headed to a local nick-knack shop to find a local post-card (4/$1), sketched a bike on the back, popped by the post-office to buy a book of stamps, then sent it off...   easy-peasy, least I could do....

Hope it brings a touch of cheer...

I had just found a stack of unused watercolor postcards in with the bike stuff (why?), and made a little painting of the Quickbeam in the stand.

The only postcard stamps available in Petaluma had Hawaiian shirts on them. Which is cool, I guess.

The deluge of cards looks wonderful. I just posted a thank you on the Rivendell Facebook site to let the Riv community know that the cards are much appreciated. To make certain that the note is received by all, I want to send a note to the Group as well. Nick is enjoying all the cards and notes, but thankfully he can thank you himself. I want to thank you for all the smiles your cards have brought to the rest of the nursing home. From the perspective of the son of a nursing home resident, working in a nursing home is demanding. You are asked to help people that others can't or aren't able to help, and your patients often can't thank you. The cards streaming in to Nick are being enjoyed by the staff and other patients as well. They are evidence that people do care. For that I want to thank you. Bob
