I had a great ride this last Sunday. Haven't been able to get out for a ride like this in a looooong time. Weather was perfect and I felt great! Five hours to go 40 miles, but that's a whole other story... :-)
I rode my All-Rounder up there and performed flawlessly. I've been considering putting drop bars back on, but the M bars haven't let me down yet. Might have to keep them on for a while longer!

Saw you mentioned ITB band trouble in your captions. I resolved a
nagging ITB problem by going to cranks with a wider Q-factor and
painful but therapeutic application of a foam roller...
Wish I could join in on a ride like this--the one thing I really miss
riding around here is long climbs and descents.

I haven't resorted to wider cranks yet as I have the perfect cranks (TA Zephyr) and am hoping to avoid that! But I have done the roller (but not in a while), stretches, and lowered saddles a bit. The big help was angling cleats so my heels were really in (toes pointed out), and also pushing the cleats inboard as far as possible, which in effect widened my Q by a couple mms. All that has limited the onset of inflammation and pain considerably. I can't ride without foot retention, in fact that's what caused my initial onset. Now I only have a flair up on fast-paced, high-medium mileage road rides for the most part. I can ride 40 milers now w/out incident. Haven't rode longer than that in a while to see how I do, but I imagine it would start flaring up.
That's one of the reasons I favor mixed-surface and MTB rides almost exclusively now. The variation in pedaling and movement (and stopping to catch my breath!) really helps out. Sitting in the same spot spinning on the road is NOT good for me.
So there ya' go with my ITB update! :-)

Is it just one knee or both? Maybe you could put a kneesaver on one
side or use an Assymetrical BB to move the troubling side out a bit?
I also pedal heel in so I know what you mean about getting the cleat
angle right! Anyway, it's a frustrating problem--hope you find
relief!

I have a Phil BB, so it can be adjusted out, didn't think about that!
I have had recommendations of a good bike fit as well, but am a bit leery of that as they seem kind of hoaky and/or biased to MCRB slam the bars sort of thing.

Yep, them's the kneesavers. I have a pair used very lightly if you'd
like to try them for a bit less than retail.
I got the idea of trying a higher Q-crank from an excellent sports
massage therapist with a medical background and a superb understanding
of physiology who was helping me with the ITB and other issues. Just
sort of brainstorming together and her doing some research gave us the
idea. And the foam roller was her idea too, though I try not to hold
it against her. B-)

I tried those knee savers once to try to fix an ITB issue... they made it too wide. I'm happiest with a Q around 170 mm so triple cranks just feel right. But that wasn't what was causing my ITB issue I found out. I went to a Chiropractor (a long time ago) who specialized in cyclists when I was having ITB issues. He said I was sitting to far forward and my hip angle was not right. So now all my bikes now have 72d seat tubes and 25-30 mm setback seat posts to get the right hip angle that eliminates the ITB problem. That solved it.
a good bike fitter may find your issue, saving you years of pain.
