Well I had a great ride and think I'm lovin it. I decided to go cheap so built the wheels from some 10 year old rims that had been hanging on the wall. An old stock set from my Giant OCR Tour bike. I built up 36 hole wheels for it back then.
So I put the shimano dyno instead of Schmidt and cyo-s instead of Edelux - 700/38 Bontrager wire bead tires (what 24 bucks a piece). Standard brooks saddle .. Anyway..I don't notice anything being "cheap" except in my pocket book.
Oh ya 60 dollar bottom bracket.

After several hundred miles it still makes me smile.

Atlantis - Rambouillet - Qbeam

I don't know why but the Qbeam is my favorite.  Over the last few years it has gotten 90% of the miles.  It is my trainer, commuter and all around ride.  It has had a Shimano generater hub on it for at least 5 year and it is still going strong.  Other then that it is a standard QB build.  I am even thinking about getting a Simple One for commuting and a set the QB up for randoneurring.

The more you ride it the more you will like it.

Thinking of picking up a Qbeam. Want a bike that I can use to
commute, shop, S24s. Can a Qbeam cover it in your experience/opinion?

Jared,

it would do all those things.  For me it would be a pain if there were loads of hills.  Even with it geared rather low 40x16.   Gearing has been my biggest challenge.  Finding the spot that is fast enough on the flats, and that doesn't kill me on hills or headwinds.  It's close now, but still tinkering.

Jared-
It depends a bit on terrain and load. As Kelly noted getting the gearing right is key for terrain. I'm also riding 40x16 on my QB and it works fine for modest hills, but I might go down to 40x18 for the summer just so I don't get as sweaty on my commute!
For "shopping" it will be fine if you and/or your load aren't too big. I'm 230 and feel I'm right at the top end for the QB frame, so I would be reluctant to put much more than my briefcase on it. (I had almost 50 lbs of groceries on my LHT yesterday with no problems, though!)

For me, the White Industries Dos Eno freewheel really opened up my
Quickbeam to a lot of possibilities. I hate having to flip a wheel
around while out on a ride, so i would never do it, but moving the
chain from one cog to the other on the same side of the wheel is
really easy. It's enabled me to do all sorts of riding in the
mountains of Southern California that I wouldn't have done if I was
stuck in my 40/16 commuting gear.

Yeah, QB.

I may have a dalliance with my Hilsen for a while, if I've got serious climbing to do, or (recently, as time has been a bit limited) with my old SS'd MB1.  But, then I'll climb back on the Quickbeam and there's just "something" about that bike.  It always whispers "further" on any ride, resists not at all when the trails tempt us, and is patient when the engine needs a rest.

Where I live with long climbs during the commute, the answers is no. I tried, and then spent time figuring out a way to get some shifting working on that bike. I succeeded, Alfine 11.
