I finally got a large basket from Riv and its too big to fit on my little Soma front rack AND have room in front for the dyno headlamp (the medium is fine, but a little small). I thought a great platform for the basket would be the Soma Porteur Rack because I could even put little panniers on there in a pinch. I'd also save a bit of money if I do that rather than get the huge Nitto front rack. Any opinions or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Isn't it a Wald, and don't they come with struts? The large Walds I owned (including the Newsboy, pictured) had their own struts and needed no rack.

The baskets Riv sells are just the basket... no struts or attachment hardware.

The Soma Porteur Rack is a nice rack. I don't own one myself but a buddy has one and uses it to support his basket. It seems like a great rack. The one thing I'll warn you about is that the SPR comes with hardware to attach to the axle. My buddy did a hack so it attaches to the eyelets instead... a better set-up in my opinion. I've never paid much attention to how it's on there but my buddy has a light mounted to one of the vertical struts.

I would consider an SPR if I need a front rack.

Good Luck,

Smitty

Thanks Smitty, I didn't notice the weird axle mount thing. Hopefully the Sam fork can accommodate eyelet mounting.

Speaking of front loading a Sam, maybe Manny-the-front-loaded-Sam-master will chime in.

Would it work to make a standoff mount for the light, and keep the rack?

Philip

Hi Phillip,
It would, but I'm thinking that bike camping wise, it would strain the little front rack quite a lot. It can't really hold much weight, you see. The porteur rack is probably a bit overkill, but it's also versatile with the pannier mounts, large platform, and center oriented light mount.
