Facebook and other "social networking" sites have led me away from blogs, which I used to read voraciously in ye olde days. I'm making a conscious effort to read more blogs. Current favorites are:
http://whileoutriding.com/
http://www.pushingthepedals.com/
http://bikenoir.blogspot.com/

I prefer blogs about touring/bikepacking/adventure more than ones about equipment fetishism (of course, that's usually a neat sideline, whether the fetish is bikes, camping gear, or cameras). Good/unique writing, photos, and perspective are necessary. I can only handle a small number of "artful" photos of handlebar twine or Phil hubs or fixed-gear chainline, but I'll put up with it if there are enough words and photos from cool rides/tours.

What are you folks reading?

Lovely Bicycle, All Hail The Black Market and BikeSnobNYC plus the weekly Cluster**** Nation keeps me well regulated.

Jim, those really do look like interesting sites.... but, I turn 68 this year and increasingly feel like life is too short to give much to Facebook (zero) or blogs.  Try this post again, around jan 7th.

On a semi related topic, my wife and I ended a brief argument by agreeing that we are working too hard and need a vacation. I was thinking Minnesota bike trails, but am open to suggestions.  Caveats: we'll be self supported on a tandem for inn to inn touring, and the stoker is vertically challenged.

Michael H: If you decide to come to MN, feel free to contact me or visit. I've ridden pretty extensively in various parts of the state, and have lots of route suggestions. I assume you've heard of the Root River trail system around Lanesboro? Really nice down there.

Rob, that site is great. I forgot about it!

Thanks Jim, so far our research has been limited to the spread done in Adventure Cycling last year.  Is late Oct too late for for the trails in Northern Minn.?  One option would be to stop on the way to Ca., after the birth of our granddaughter.  I'm also scheduled for a conference in St Paul in early April next year.  But is that too early for bike touring?

April and October in Minnesota are either glorious and perfect, or cold/wet/snowy. Flip a coin. If October, your odds are considerably better in southern MN, but April days are not in frequently wet and cold anywhere in the state. I went up north in October a few years ago. It was nice during the day, but sub-freezing at night, and I wasn't adequately equipped for it. I ended up pulling a long day back to Duluth where I could get a ride.

Thanks for mentioning my blog Jim, and I just thought I'd post to let you all know that I am posting yet again after a brief work-imposed hiatus.

How do you all prefer to keep track of your blogs? I have been considering moving away from bookmarks and using RSS. Perhaps there's a better way I'm unaware of.

Cheers,

erik

I've met "Guitar Ted" several times. After my failed/abandoned Trans Iowa attempt in 2011, I showered up and went to volunteer at checkpoint 2 (mile 170-something), which was at a nondescript corner of a couple gravel farm roads with nothing in sight but corn fields, and yukked it up in the cool, damp Iowa April with Guitar Ted and some of his buddies until late into the night. Good times.

Incidentally, that was the day I became an "unracer". Once I realized I had no chance to even make the first checkpoint in time, I started exploring back roads on my own and taking pictures. It was much more fun to just ramble and explore than it was to be racing against the clock. I knew then that I am purely a bike tourist, with very little racing ability and almost zero racing inclination.

Late to the party as usual, but if no one else has mentioned it,
"Lovely Bicycle." It has its precious elements but it is (and this is
what makes it stand out from many other blogs) literate and
aesthetically "advanced." It interests me, at least, to read a
carefully considered, literate and nice looking blog by a woman.

Dave Moulton's, mostly for history. *He* doesn't write well, but his
perspective helps make up for it.

Others, but my daughter has frozen this laptop on a "My Little Pony
Gag" clip and I can't get to my list of bookmarks.

I subscribe to Guu Watanabe's flickr, the images, for me, speak volumes. Shoichi-San's wife takes lovely photos of Japan, I would really like to travel there and intern with him for a few months. Perhaps on my next sabbatical from work...http://www.flickr.com/photos/guuwatanabe/7466426130/in/contacts/

Jan Heine has a lot of good solid info: http://janheine.wordpress.com/2012/06/27/cascade-1200-this-years-big-ride/

Martina at Swift Industries does a lot of touring, bag design, community, and writing. I like her style a lot, she is also a very nice person to meet. http://cycleswift.wordpress.com/category/swift-industries/

A new one for me is:
The Blayleys are doing some crazy crazy rides, I like their riding style and they are friends with one of my best friends, so I get to see him in a lot of their posts. http://blayleys.blogspot.com/

I really enjoy reading this wordpress site, they are working on a book too, travel tour, and no bullshit. http://cycleswift.wordpress.com/2011/09/03/tough-tender-flaming-wheeled-glory/
