What are the widest 700c fenders available -- the 60 mm Planet Bike
ones? And of those available, which are the best in terms of value and
sturdiness? I don't need very long ones since I generally amputate the
rear to end just aft of the rack and, in front, prefer to use a long
flap that will not be damaged by hitting obstacles.

-- For the Fargo, now that our "monsoon" is here.

('Nother question: for your Fargo owners or former owners: what have
you found to be the best weight distribution, front vs rear, for loads
of 30 to 50 lb?)

Thanks.

Those are what I used.  They fit a 2.1 tire underneath.  But I didn't check out any other offerings.  Just purchased the PB and went with it.  So something may be better.

Never loaded my Fargo up too awful much, but after about 25 to 30 pounds in the back, the front end did become a bit light and wanted to wander on some climbs.  Again, that could be influenced by the fact I'm a heavy rider (230 or so) and that affects handling more than weight of bags, IMO.  (That's from experience with the Fargo, Kogswell and a couple of other bikes I no longer own.)

Will admit to having some seller's remorse over the Fargo, it was a nice handling bike.  But just kept making me do silly long off-paved road riding, which is not good for my hand conditions.

Thanks for those comments, Eric. Yes, the Fargo certainly does invite
off road rambles (luckily here the rains have arrived and at least
some of the dirt roads nar the river are again open to the public).

The PBs are a wee bit narrower than the 60 mm BAs, but they stop the
spray perfectly well. I just wonder if there are any fenders wider
yet. Certainly the PBs are a good buy.

The front end does get light with 30 lb in the rear, which is why I
want to experiment with distributing most or at least more of it to
the front: am waiting to operate on my two pairs of Axiom Dutch
panniers so that each side can be mounted separately.

Odd: neither the Fargo nor the current Riv handle rear loads as well
as the Motobecane and my first, 1995 Riv, even though the Motobecane
is very light 531 tubing and the '95 Riv was light 753 with short
(42.5 cm) stays and a steeper head (73 versus the current Rivs' 72.5
or so). The Riv waggles with as little as 25 lb while the Motobecane
was steady with 10 lb more. The old Riv handled 30 lb in rear panniers
with aplomb -- I could ride it no hands at 10 mph as well as at 20.
Wonder what geometry/tubing/etc makes for good rear load handling? All
three have very stiff racks, either Fly -- Motobecane and '95 Riv;
Logo (Fargo) or -- current Riv -- custom, 10 mm stainless steel tubing
which is at least as stiff as the Fly.

My Cascadias are larger than 60mm Big Apples: http://www.biketinker.com/2012/fine-bikes/state-of-the-bikes-3-14-12/
The tire in back is a temporary smaller tire.

Send me your Sno-Cats, and I'll send you these wheels, and your Planet Bike fenders will fit your Big Apples...

A number of years back I had Berthouds on a 700c Atlantis with Big
Apples for shoes. Can't remember what the width was on the Berthouds
but it was a nice combo.

You will have to pry my SnoCats out of my cliche'd cold, dead hands.
Cascadias it is, tho'.

That is excessively cool! Please post photos of the naked chick flaps,
too (or was that MTBR post someone else's?).

Patrick, I run 60mm Berthoud Fenders with my Atlantis and there's
still a good amount of room for 28x50 mm Fat Franks.

When the Fat Franks wear down enough (sometime in the next 4 years) or
I get bored (at a whim) I intend to mount 60mm tires and expect no
problems at all.

Thanks for the photos and description, Amit. Good to know that I have
at least a couple of options. I'm rather leaning toward the PB
Cascadias right now as much for aesthetics (or lack thereof: the Fargo
has black racks, black stem and black seatpost) but I will take a
closer look at the B's before I decide.
