Thanks for those comments, Eric. Yes, the Fargo certainly does invite
off road rambles (luckily here the rains have arrived and at least
some of the dirt roads nar the river are again open to the public).
The PBs are a wee bit narrower than the 60 mm BAs, but they stop the
spray perfectly well. I just wonder if there are any fenders wider
yet. Certainly the PBs are a good buy.
The front end does get light with 30 lb in the rear, which is why I
want to experiment with distributing most or at least more of it to
the front: am waiting to operate on my two pairs of Axiom Dutch
panniers so that each side can be mounted separately.
Odd: neither the Fargo nor the current Riv handle rear loads as well
as the Motobecane and my first, 1995 Riv, even though the Motobecane
is very light 531 tubing and the '95 Riv was light 753 with short
(42.5 cm) stays and a steeper head (73 versus the current Rivs' 72.5
or so). The Riv waggles with as little as 25 lb while the Motobecane
was steady with 10 lb more. The old Riv handled 30 lb in rear panniers
with aplomb -- I could ride it no hands at 10 mph as well as at 20.
Wonder what geometry/tubing/etc makes for good rear load handling? All
three have very stiff racks, either Fly -- Motobecane and '95 Riv;
Logo (Fargo) or -- current Riv -- custom, 10 mm stainless steel tubing
which is at least as stiff as the Fly.
