But what color bar tape?  Newbaum's eggplant with clear shellac, Newbaum's maroon with clear shellac, or cork bar tape with amber?

The better to catch the rider when he's pitched forward from that sloping seat.

Though, in all fairness, I find myself nudging my B-17 a tad higher in the back on my fixed-gear QuickBeam. It just feels better, maybe has something to do with not being able to coast. I know that it's also helping my ischial tuberosities make good impressions on the leather.

And like the bars, still getting tweaked.  Saddle has been adjusted to be level.  I thought maybe the springs would give enough to make it "sit" level when my considerable weight was on it, but apparently I'm not heavy enough -- not a phrase I think or type very often.

That's a beautiful bike, but I have to throw my two cents in on the bar and stem combo. Ack. Sorry, that's just funky looking. Are you sure you want to be THAT high up? Beauty's in the eye of the yadda yadda, but ouch.

It's coming down some (and I'll level the saddle, too), but I think the visual is actually more adversely affected by the fact that the levers are way too high -- when they come down, the comfort level will actually be better, I think, and the look will definitely not be quite as loony. I DID caution that the bike was "in progress", guys...

I am a self-confessed high handlebar guy, you will get guff from the "racer boy"  set out there who think anyone not riding with thier head below thier read is not a "real" rider but do what is comfortable for you. Love the look of the simple one, wish I could convince my wife to let me add another to the stable...

I would go with cork bar tape - no shellac. I did the shellac thing on
my Quickbeam. Matched the saddle really well.

But it turned out to be a maintenance nightmare. Subsequently, Mark
turned me on to just cork bar tape.

Advantages:

1) Cleans up really easy with water and dish soap.

2) Never needs to be renewed (ala Clear or Amber Shellac)

3) It's more "grippy" than shellac'ed bar tape

Disadvantages:

...I can't think of any

I agree about the cork bar tape being nice.
If you're careful it matches the sidewalls of your tires, too :)

Looks great Tom!

I've done a more 'economy build on my SimpleOne, but had some high
quality bits from the parts bin.

Front wheel in Suntour Superbe Pro hub to Mavic MA-40 rims. Great
handbuilt wheel from 1986.
Rear wheel is a newly built Dura Ace track hub to Open Sport rims.
The crank is taken from a 1986 stumpjumper. I removed the inner
chainring and bought a bash guard ring from http://www.bbgbashguard.com/superlights.html
It's geared 36/16 now, but I may be tweaking that soon. It's low
enough to get me up the hill on my homeward commute. I can spin
comfortably at 17 MPH, and a bit faster for short distances. I'm not
trying to race this thing!
I had noodle bars, but they just weren't quite right, and have just
switched to flat bars. Contrary to some notes on the RBW info, I like
flat bars with a bar-end hand grip, but I don't have much distance on
those bars yet. Beautiful zero degree CrMo bar from Nitto.

I'm a tweaker, so things _will_ change. I enjoy it now!

Sorry, wasn't trying to impose my aesthetic or ergonomic choices on you, just commenting.

But you asked about bar tape, not bar height. My preference is to match the bar tape to the saddle or a trim color, not to the main frame color. And if there are too many colors in the mix things start to look random rather than chosen. I really like the look of brown or honey (Brooks) saddles with orange cloth tape and amber shellac. The shellac darkens the tape to a color close to the honey saddle and they age beautifully. I haven't had issues with shellac needing tons of maintenance...it more or less waterproofs the tape, you can still feel the cloth texture so it's grippy, it has a slight shine, it develops a fantastic patina, it's easy to add another coat, it's arguably Eco-friendly, etc. What's not to like?

I'd go with Toshi Orange Cloth, clear shellac.  If needed, I'll mail you some Toshi orange cloth.  

Post more photos, now that your setup is converging.  That should soothe some of the handwringers.  

Speaking of handwringing, I have a tendency to handwring over wooden fenders.  It's an absolute fact that they are beautiful, and are spectacular feats of craftsmanship.  But functionally, they are a solution looking for a problem, in my opinion.

Re fender-wringing, the flat wooden fenders are very easy to install (a plus), have essentially unlimited flex fore and aft (making them ideal for tire removal on bikes with rear-facing drops like the QB and the SO) and often very attractive -- the ones on my Quickbeam (birds eye maple with some kind of wood inlays that match the frame color perfectly) are to my eye really pretty. Pic here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/37542512@N04/4411489919/in/set-72157623567913352   Functionally, they're not as good as normal fenders, although interestingly, using Riv flaps, especially on the front, helped A LOT.  I can now ride happily with them through a drizzle and even a steady rain, but in anything I would characterize as a heavy rain, water begins to bleed out the edges. 

 

I'm really interested to see if the compound curve fenders I put on the SimpleOne will improve the performance; it seems like they should.  Although I think they're even more attractive than the flat ones (of course, they're more expensive, too), they're much more difficult to install (virtually no flex, unlike the flat ones), and almost require additional firm attachment points.  (I bolted the front of the front fender to the underside of the Nitto Mini Front Rack, pic here http://www.flickr.com/photos/37542512@N04/4411489919/in/set-72157623567913352 and the SimpleOne brake bridge is tapped for a fender mount, so the rear is bolted there, too, in addition to the two sets of stays and the kickstand plate mount.)  OTOH, once installed, they are rock solid and VERY sturdy.

Interesting, I'm finding that the 60 mm Berthoud fenders on my Bombadil are nowhere near as good at keeping the water off my feet as the SKS Longboards I have on my other bike. I guess the wide Berthouds are much flatter and the water sprays out the sides rather than being directed groundwards. The mudflap helps a little, but not a lot, because it is also flat. Ah well, the price of fat tyres!
