I'm interested in getting one of their older style bags. Any tips on
where I might find something like that?

Thanks,
Jordan

Check out Frost River or Duluth Pack while not labeled Baggins they are similar.  Some of the Duluth Pack bags are a little goofy (the straps are reversed on the Hobo bag).  Otherwise e-bay or this list are your best bet but the Baggins Bags don't come up for sale a lot.

Dan is pretty spot-on, your best bet is trying to get someone here to
sell you theirs. As someone who's now got a mix of baggins, ns tweed,
carradice and berthoud bags, at some point you have to embrace the un-
matchiness (if that's what you're after).

I'll bring this up once every 20 months or so, at most.

Frost River stole our designs and calls them their own. The guy there
is nice enough, but got desperate, and did this. He goofed up too many
bags in major ways, and was 3 months behind on delivery. We lent him
money, did all the "right & nice" things, and he didn't respond in
kind, not at all.
I don't want anybody to scold him on our behalf. Please don't, I don't
want him to go out of business. I don't think we're selling any fewer
bags because of him...but why'd he have to do that.
I'd LIKE it (don't demand it, even if I could) if we-as-a-group don't
promote Frost River bags here.

The bags were fine, the fabric was fine---is fine---but the current
fabric (Sackville and Brand V) is truly the best fabric I've ever seen
for this kind of bag. It is drier to the hand---it don't pick up dirt
and get black. It's air-tight---probably 25 percent tighter than any
other fabric except Carradice, and is at least as tight as that. It is
far more waterproof than any Duluth or FR fab.

Those are nice bags, both, and I swore I wouldn't promote our products
on this free-for-all conversational/informational forum. But I can't
for the life of me understand the attraction to the older bags when
the newer bags are so groovy. The name? Baggins Bags? OK--hard to beat
that one!

Over and out and calm as a placid pool now.

Hey Jordan,
During the Rivendell garage sale I was able to pick up some tweed
bags. One I let my little brother "borrow" and another one I have
sitting somewhere in the apartment. If your interested I might be
willing to sell it. I want to have a reason to keep it but alas I have
too many bags and not enough bikes (I'm working on that). Let me know
if your interested.

I would love to buy a medium-capacity handlebar bag that (1) straps to
the handlebars (requires no rack, hangs down close to steering axis),
and (2) has a couple of pockets facing the rider that can be accessed
while riding. Something like a (smaller) version of the old Baggins
Hobo bag, which seems to still be in demand, at least among members of
this forum.

My ideal bag would be a design like Acorn's medium handlebar bag, made
with Rivendell's current excellent waxed canvas.

Rivendell already offers several nice handlebar bags, and I'm sure
they have their hands full with other products in development. But I
would certainly buy this handlebar bag if it existed. There's another
thread going in which someone is looking for a bag for Bullmoose bars,
I bet a Hobo-style bag would work for those too.

Grant, I think you pegged it;   the Baggins bags were gone before I discovered Riv, but I'm really enamored w/ those round badges, and a bag named Baggins... just perfect for expert treasure hunters...

And, I will admit I've been aware of Duluth for ages, decades, always liked their 'classic' style for canoes, pulled over to Rovers... (similarly, I've been fairly accused of trying to live out of an LL Bean catalog).

FR, on the other hand, I only found them *after* I discovered Baggins were gone;   wasn't aware of this history.  Good to know.

I like the Sackvilles, but am more partial towards the Nigel Smythes....  I've yet to delve deep into bags, etc., and when I went to buy my first, happened to be when the one I was wanting was going to be awhile before it was back in stock.    I ended up w/ an Acorn, which I really like, though.

Grant, et al.,
When I was looking for a Baggins-like bag I inquired at Frost River about whether they were still in business or not.  I received an email from the guy that runs the place now, Chris Benson.  Here is a snippet of his email:

As for the marketing stuff, here is some background...

-Yes, Frost River used to design and make bags for Rivendale.  This relationship erroded before I was involved with the company.
-The founder of Frost River was forced to shut down the business in September of 2008 and it was down for 1 year.
-I purchased Frost River from him and brought it back to life (fortunately with many of the same employees) in September of 2009.

I ended up buying a modern bag (Saddle Sack) from you guys.  But it might be worth noting (assuming this guy is telling the truth) that the current company is a just remnant of the former company.  I agree that they shouldn't be selling your designs.
Cheers,
Brett

Per one blog I read, Frost River has a new owner as of the end o'June, beginning of July.  The new owner may, or may not be aware of the past history.  This should not change Grant's response, though.
Full disclosure - I purchased a couple of their bags before finding out about the relationship issues.  Also own a couple of the Duluth Pack bags which should have been shipped to Rivendell but were not for various and sundry reasons.  Also agree with Grant that the newer bags are much nicer in material and construction.  But I still like the older bags.  Prolly for the Minnesota connection.  As good/bad as that seems to be.  Grant does seem to have better luck with the present bag makers

Wherefore is it "Rivendale" to some? I just don't get it. Why is this so common?
OK, gotta get outside and enjoy July 4th.
