Hey all,

Sadly my Atlantis went missing last night from the front of my house
Apr 19-20 in Santa Fe, NM. If yall - especially anyone in SF or
Albuquerque - could keep an eye out I'd appreciate it.

spot.

Front and rear touring racks

front and rear bags - rear: black carradice saddlebag, front - green
ostritch handlebar bag

mismatched front/rear tires: (f) - Panaracer Pasela (r) black Schwalbe
Marathon Supreme

rear wheel - velocity synergy rim w/ Shimano Deore XT hub

faded green cloth handlebar tape, gum brake lever hoods

brown leather saddle with slot (Selle AnAtomica)

silver SKS fenders

brass bell

And it's back!
I can't say enough about the two Santa Fe County Sheriff's
deputies who spent all morning tracking down my bike. They ended up
stopping traffic on one of the busiest streets in town when they saw
someone riding my bike. I think they were almost as excited as I
was.

Thank you all for your thoughts and advice and offers to help - both
on and off the list. It's nice to know there are people looking out.
It's been a roller coaster of a day, from the sunken-gut when I walked
outside this morning to a bike that wasn't there, to having it back
before I'd even come to terms with it being gone.

Yet another reason it pays to have a unique bike.

Thanks again everyone. I'm gonna go ride my bike.

Once upon a time when I lived in Austin, TX,  I found a Raleigh DL-1 abandoned in my front yard. I took it in, amazed at it's alien features and appalling brakes. I cleaned it and lubed it, and then realized it must have been stolen. I called the police, and told them the story, described the bike, and gave them my number. A few days later, I got a call from a South African fellow who'd had a DL-1 stolen from his front porch. I invited him over, and he ID'd his bike. I was sad to see it go, but happy to know it was home. I soon found a used DL-1 and enjoyed it tremendously for awhile. This was before Mountain Bikes, so I thought I was very original on dirt roads and trails. The only problem, other than the brakes, was the gearing was too high, so when Mountain Bikes appeared from California, I thought that was the main feature. That and better brakes.

There is almost no more personal a violation than bike theft. Almost. Still interested in the circumstances. I am vigilant, but the threat of theft puts a damper on some bike rides in the Phoenix metro area.

That's great!  You should write a letter to the local paper, or tv news.  Maybe they will pick it up as a human interest story with some tips about keeping bikes safe from thieves.   The thieves might even get a little message.

For me part of the beauty of dynamo lights is that they're part of the
bike. I feel like the risk of having my lights stolen (from a dynamo
set-up) is about the same as someone stealing my seat, handlebars, brakes,
racks, or anything that can be un-bolted.

I often use an Exposure Diablo in a helmet mount for commuting. VERY bright, excellent beam. Very light, rechargeable, long charge life (at least 3-4 hours on highest power, up to 8 at low power, which is still quite bright). Downside is price -- almost $200. But that's still cheaper than dynamo hub and dynamo light.

I like the Dinotte lights for commuting. I use the dual lithiums. They go on and off the bike very quickly and give plenty of light for riding on dark roads. Not as convenient as a generator but they move from bike to bike, which makes them very versatile.

Hey group, I am thinking about getting a Generator hub/light combo

Coppi has a very different off-bike physique. The nickname "stork"
surely had something to do with the contrast of his appearance on the
bike and off, as the bird, graceful in flight yet so awkward on the
ground. His bike's fit to his proportions ought to be compared to that
more than Contador. Time in P.O.W. camps and life before the invention
of the Twinkie is all that keeps him that low in the hooks.

The only disadvantage I have found with bars at or above the seat is when I
want to rock the bike while standing up. But as I age I find I sit down,
both on and off the bike, a lot more.

Woo Hoo! The Bombadil rides again. We in Santa Fe are so glad to hear
this outcome as bicycle theft is normally lower on the list than
barking dog complaints. It may be because they were county mounties.
No matter what, we all thank the officers for their hard work, keen
eyes, and good luck. Let's ride soon.
