My epic tube patching fest continues.
Normally when I get a flat I can track down the puncture patch it and be done with the ordeal.
I forgot that this doesn't apply when one rides through a patch of goatheads.
I rode througha patch about a week ago and have been working on three tubes ever since.
One is now holding air, two are still flat, I've run out of einstein patches. The tubes are covered in buboes
from all the patches I've used.

A while back I lived and rode in Albuquerque and learned that if I rode through a patch of goatheads the best
practice was to throw the tubes away. I should have done that with these but this has become a 'tool time' sort
of challenge. I ordered more patches.
The struggle continues.
sigh,

Contest. Two questions. Winner takes all.

1. How many punctures have you gotten in one ride of no more than 50 miles?

2. How many patches have you counted on any one tube?

BTW: what is an Einstein patch?

Badges of Honors, tube badges are. Argh. Beth Harmon has tubes richly decorated with them. The point is in the tire, not the tube, methinks. So seek thy Goatheads there, but thee knowst that, mate. However: imagine a more resilient tube and slime mixt in the proper tire. There be treasure!

6 patches. I was riding with my Venturing Crew and all were culprits
were goat heads. The kids had plenty of practice.

I've had a buddy of mine who had at least 12 patches on one tube. When
asked why he didn't just replace the tube. He replied, " The tube has
sentimental value! I can't throw it away!"

has anyone tried dumping some sealant in tubes that have removable
valve cores in order to prevent/combat punctures goatheads? I've
never seen these suckers first hand, but if they're just little
pinprick type punctures, sealant works remarkably well and might be
worth a try. I've pulled those little bits of glass and wire out of
tires that like to worm their way down and nick the tube - using the
sealant has helped prevent these flats.

I've used various brands of sealant in tubes (you can get it into
presta valve even if the valve does not have a "removable" core: just
force the locknut off, let the core fall into the tube, fill, locate
the core by feel and work it back up to and into the stem -- it's no
big deal) both on and off road, precisely for this purpose, only to
have, inevitably, a larger puncture make a huge, slimy mess of goo
inside the tire casing -- and of course you are left with a useless
tube; at least I've never been able to clean the punctured area well
enough to get any patch to adhere. Overall, using a tire like the Big
Apples with its pretty effective, but not ride-harming belt, is less
work.

Regarding the original question: gave up after one traumatic incident
after having applied 12 patches with many more still needed. Once
counted well over 30 patches on a (skinny road -- 559!!) tube that I
was about to install. (This tube had probably been in recirculating
use for five years or so.)

Patrick in VT,

Yeah it works for a while (can be up to 100's of holes, but that can
happen in one bad line) and then it makes a mess. I would rather have
sealant than not though in heavy goathead areas. I have had better
luck with true goo and specialized airlock over slime, but all work
fine, until they don't. I do have a pair of airlock tubes I bought in
2004 that still work on my cross bike. Most of the albuquerque courses
are full of thorns and you are almost guaranteed not to finish a race
without some sort of sealant.

I think people often just use stans in tubes now, either through
removable cores, through bodging the core apart or through a syringe
and asmall hole in the tube which will be patched.

I have had luck patching unsealable holes in sealed tubes by moving
all the sealant away from the patch area, cleaning with rubbing
alcohol and then patching deliberately in my workshop.

FOrtunately for me there are not too many goatheads in Los Alamos yet.
Santa fe is getting bad and Albuquerque is a disaster. Here are some
pics from riding in santa fe:

The Einstein patch comes in the Einstein Patch Kit from

Rivendell.

The best patches I've had the pleasure to use (and the goatheads caused me to use bunches).

Aha! Should get some of those, but 10 for $5 (plus the other stuff, I
know) is rather high. Other sources?

The Einstein is *by* Riv, not another source for....

I've used Park, and currently have Rema Tip-Top's, which are fine, haven't yet tried the Einstein's, but intend to include 'em in my next order (if I don't forget again).

The Einsteins stick better and are smaller than the less expensive 'generic' patches I've used.

Typically (that's without goatheads) an Einstein patch kit lasts me about a year (~7k miles) using JB greens.

In real goathead country (Eastern Washington - New Mexico) I've gone with slime tubes with some success.

Maybe those new fangled Foss tubes will work. Maybe we need tank treads.

I've had a rough few months with flats from goatheads, after no flats
for over a year. They squeak in though the sidewall of the Supremes.
I just put on a pair of Foss, rim liners and all, not for flat
protection, but ease of patching. I retired several well patched
tubes and carry no spare. I will soon see how well that works. In 10
years I hope to have two well patched Foss tubes.

Regards,
Ray
