My wheels from Rich arrived yesterday;  spent last night doing the rough build-up.  Still need to adjust the shifting, brakes, etc.  But, this morning as I was headed out the door, I quickly snapped some phone pics, trying to show the clearance that the new Bombadil frame has.   The tires are Kirk Pacenti's NeoMoto 2.3, and I've got plenty of room left, could go even bigger (the MegaMoto 2.4 isn't available yet, but would surely fit with no troubles, methinks).

Impressive. My older Bombadil is cosy with Quasi Motos, so good on you!

The key to tire clearance photography is standing WAY back and zooming WAY in.  That's hard when you're half built bike is there in the workshop.

Very much the case: it's a house-refinishing/ woodworking/ Rover repair/ gunshop/ bicycle repair shop/ storage closet, not much room to turn around in...

It's too pretty today, so I've taken the afternoon off and relocated my workshop to the deck:

Hey, another tentacular Bombadil! No wonder you found mine so quick. It looks great, I love the orange.

What brakes are you using? I'd be interested to hear your thoughts, because I'm not 100 percent convinced by the CR720s on my Bombadil. I don't feel like I'm getting enough advantage—e.g. can't lock the rear wheel above 10 km/h. I also get a bit of fork shudder. It may just be a weight thing, though.

(beautiful bike!)
I had a hate/hate relationship with the Tektro CR720s until I bought
the Yokozuna pads from Rivendell. Now they stop well, don't shudder,
and I just don't think about them. I put it off because I got the
wrong ones (the mountain pads) the first time, and didn't want to pay
as much for shipping as for the pads. I don't buy that much (my garage
is full of STUFF), and my wife gets me most of my Riv kit for
presents. So, Xmas stocking, pad replacement, happy 2012 so far.
I just checked, and I did call out the Yokozunas specifically in my
Spring Inventory of the Quickbeam:
http://www.biketinker.com/2012/fine-bikes/state-of-the-quickbeam-3-3-12/
I wanted to make sure, since they did make a big difference. Still
bugs me that it takes a whole separate product from a whole separate
company to make an acceptable brake, but I guess that's the upside of
being "in the know."

If you already have the red pads, just ignore everything I just
said...

Hi Phillip,

Thanks for the reply. I'm using Kool Stop MTB dual compound pads. Stop OK, squeal like crazy! When they wear out, I will try cartridge pads, salmon only. I sort of thought the shudder was a function of fork blade length vs. cantilever geometry, rather than the pads.

Tom

P.S. Sorry about the thread hijack.

Yes, I've been learning patience, awaiting mine to arrive.   Worth it.  !!!!   :)   But that's why I was delighted to see yours, another one in the wild. Helped build my anticipation....

Color:

I fell in love w/ my green Ram, preferred it over the blue.   Later, found out about the orange before it, *really* loved it.  Not that it lessened my love for my green Ram, but, I had orange envy.

When I decided to get a Bomba, they were transitioning out of the clear powdercoat phase, hadn't quite settled on the green yet; and, if I had an orange Ram would have loved the green Bomba, but, since I have a green Ram, orange seemed right.  Actually, today, my wife made the comment that she thought it funny that a California company would have painted a bike in 'Tennessee orange'.  (Thought it best to leave it there, instead of getting into the history....)

+ + +

Brakes:

I went w/ Paul Motolites.   These things are almost too adjustable!  Unlike the Ram, where you bolt the calipers on and go, with these Motolite v-brakes, you install each post, and can adjust the tension on each spring, adjust the height of the pad holder (and rotate it), then adjust the washer arrangement for the pads to vary offset for different widths, then set the cable's length... and each change, affects all of the others... so, it's taking a bit longer to get the brakes dialed in w/ these.   I can tell I'll end up being happy, but, I now understand why some people don't like them.   There's just more of a learning curve.   It's a good thing, will just take a little time.

Funny you mention the shudder;  at the moment, I'm still getting some serious squeal from the front, reminiscent of a cheap 10-speed bike from junior-high-school days...  I feel the squeal; maybe not as a shudder, quite, but, you can feel it in addition to hearing it.   I expect, as I improve my tuning on them, it should cease.

Did you have Rive build your bike then ship it to you?   I already had the crank, bars, gotten the bottom bracket from Jan Heine, the brakes, etc.;  so I've built this one myself, as I did the Ram.   This one went faster, but, is requiring more tuning (due to the brakes).

I think they'll complement each other well....

No worries on my part!   I'd not heard that regarding squeal and blade length... I thought it was my adjusting..  (still kinda think it is....).

Mine's a 56cm, on 650B rims and tires, so it'll be shorter than yours, but... on a flat, I'd not heard it, but when I turn down my driveway, a bit more of a downhill, then the squeal comes out.....

Hmmmmm............

Hmmm, I am also getting a squel with the Koolstop dual compound, you think the all salmon would be an improvement? Only issue is the damn things are so expensive I cant see just trashing them....

Well.....   the original pads w/ my Tektro calipers for the Ram, once I pitched those black things (they were making a mess of my gumwalls), I switched to Koolstop salmons, and loved them.

But, these Pauls came with Koolstop salmons from the get-go, and I've still got some squealing.   So, I can't suggest trashing the dual-compound ones yet...

I hope, I can do some more tweaking and get it to quiet down.   Maybe just break it in a bit more (no puns intended).

Orange Bomb and green Ram: that sounds like the best bike collection you can make with the fewest bikes!
