So this year's tour is over. It was a blast but I'd being lying if I didn't say I feel absolutely knackered. Multiple 100+ mile days in the heat which included multiple long exposed climbs really seems to have taken it out of me. Still, it was a great time. Here are the pictures. More info on the trip in a follow-up message.

Oh, as far as Riv content, while I rode my LHT it was set-up with many Riv and Rivish parts--Silver Shifters, Noodles, Brooks Saddle, Schwalbe Marathons. I wore MUSA shorts and a Riv cycling cap everyday.

Nice trip, Mike!  Looks like you had great weather.  I have got to get out to Rainier.  How was traffic in the park?

Heading out from Packwood and up to Cayuse Pass the traffic wasn't too
bad. The road doesn't have much of a shoulder but everyone gave us a
wide berth. Riding out of White River Campground there seemed to be
more traffic. We had a close call with a truck and trailer that buzzed
us but other than that no problems. We got chased by three different
packs of dogs in Wapot, WA on our way through there but other than
that we had no other negative car/dog interactions. People in OR were
especially nice.

I should add that during our trip we only ran into and spoke with two
other touring cyclist. Right off the bat, heading into Gifford we
stopped and spoke with two cyclotourist--Tim from VA and Ted from OR--
who were heading down to Crater Lake. Tim had a really odd bike that
he built himself accessorized with Riv parts and components--Grip
Kings, NItto rack and some other items.

The were part of a bigger group who were behind them, one of whom was
on a custom Rivendell. We rode into Prosser with a guy named John
Colver who was doing a book tour by bike. It was great talking with
him. He was from Seattle and a former mountain guide. http://johncolver.com/about

But back to your question Brian, if I lived in the area I wouldn't
hesitate to ride in and around Rainier. We were really fortunate that
we did the climb to Sunrise super early in the morning. Only a few
cars passed us on the way up and none on the way down.

Thanks for posting this. What a great trip - looks like some
excellent dirt sections. The sunrise ride sounded the best.

That looks fantastic. Was just out that way about a month ago, but
was unable to translate our trip into bike time. Nice outing.

Jealous!  I really miss riding in the Northwest--used to go out there every summer to visit family and ride, but they moved.  I'd probably have to trim your route to 60 or so miles per day and take a little longer to enjoy it but man, sure the NW sure is pretty...

Just finished looking at your trip photos... there were some beautiful sections and some scary. dry desolate sections.
Some day I'm going to get up there and do some tours.  Maybe next summer.

That long Hunter looked like a bus, how did your friend like the bike after the ride was over?

He liked the Hunter well enough. He's friends with Rick (the builder)
and got a good deal on the bike. The squishy fork wasn't really needed
and he felt like the 26" wheels slowed him down on descents. Obviously
we didn't maximize the carrying capacity of either of our bikes but I
guess it was nice to know we had something capable of handling a load
of firewood and multiple water melons. Although it was hot and dry
through the entire trip we never ran out of water. Or rather, the few
times we did we were able to collect and treat, with a SteriPen, water
from creeks and streams along the road. I can't recommend the Polar
and CamelBack insulated bottles enough, they worked great. I wouldn't
hesitate to tour and explore E. Oregon again but would do my best to
avoid E. WA.
