I'm planning a nomadic sojourn through New England in early October
with my mountain bike and my Riv. While this will obviously require
use of my vehicle to transport me to/from some of the great riding
places in VT, NH, ME and MA, I do hope expect a good portion of my
time spent will be riding the Bombadil

Several areas that I plan to visit (for which I'm wondering whether
there's any interest from folks on the forum to meet up and ride) may
include:

- Cape Cod / Martha's Vineyard (1-2 day ride)
- Keene NH to Brattleboro VT (1-2 day on rail trail mostly)
- Acadia National / Cadillac Mountain

It's just a notion at this point... interested to see if there's any
mutual interest.

Peace,
BB

I'd be interested in riding the Acadia part. I've ridden the carriage roads there before and they are awesome. You can ride the entire day and never meet up with a car. Plus there's the Jordan House where they serve great food with a wonderful view. If the dates line up I'd love to ride those trails with other Riv riders.  Bill

Do you know of anyone making cycling bib shorts with minimal padding?
Maybe akin to the old leather chamois and nothing more? My Brooks B17
now fits so well I find padding to be a numbing nuisance on long
rides.

Steve, you seem to be lost... looking for the "padless shorts" thread
perhaps?

As part of my October New England Nomadic Sojourn, I'm working on the
Maritime segment... Boston - Martha's Vineyard - Cape Cod Loop... a
(somewhat ambitious) multi-day, multi-modal light tour that will
combine train, boat and bike.

Day One would start with a pedal from some point in Boston to South
Station, rolling onto the train (from Boston to Plymouth), then a 45-
mile pedal to Woods Hole (scenic, with some rail trail), followed by a
ferry to Martha's Vineyard, and a short pedal to lodging/camping,
still TBD
Day Two would consist of an all-day bike tour of the interior of
Martha's Vineyard (which if you've never been is one of the most
beautiful places on earth, in my opinion)
Day Three would begin with a ferry ride to Hyannis (on Cape Cod),
followed by a 50 mile pedal (including the Cape Cod Rail Trail) to
Provincetown, ending with a beautiful late afternoon/evening boat ride
back into Boston.

Boy that would be SOME RIDE!!! Now let me see if all the
transportation and lodging components exist to pull this off! Anyone
wishing to join me, I hope you like fried clams, chowder and beer...
This could be like a Man vs Food Biking episode...

Peace,
BB

Sounds like a great plan. I'm going to try and make it but will depend on the date. I'm up for either/both camping or B&B's, hotels. My daughter lives in Boston so I'll have a chance to visit. Maybe she'll join us too. Riv east this past spring was a blast so I'm game!

I live on the Cape . I've done the rides you're talking about . It's
a great time to do it . The tourists have all gone away until next
summer . I would be interested in doing the cape cod vineyard part.
Also have a few friends that might want to do it .

This sounds like a really interesting trip. I think it would be worth
taking the train up to Boston for.

I too would be interested in the trip to the Vineyard.  I live in New Haven, CT.  Could take Amtrak up to a rendezvous point.

Stay away from the shore-too much car traffic. Do the Berkshires
(Mass), VT, NH, and maybe end up in Bah Hahbah (Bar Harbor).

I'm recovering from shoulder surgery so can't join in. Different
month, but if anyone on the list is in central MA or southern VT on
August 27th, check into the D2R2, one of the best events in New
England. I think they have 40 mile, metric century and regular
century options. Part road but mostly gravel woods roads. Lots of
Riv type bikes and guys like Peter Wiegle show up every year. Harris
Cyclery (of Sheldon Brown fame) is always well represented. The D2R2
doesn't have a web site per se but Google it and you'll get a lot of
info. Modest registration fee goes to a land preservation trust.
Tremendous group of riders - music, food and beer at the end of the
day! Should be on everyone's riding bucket list.

Even though I'm mostly a lurker here and only occasional contributor,
i would love to join you all on this itinerary, which sounds great.
With two young kids right now, I'm not sure it's going to possible
from a practical standpoint, but keep me posted.

+1 for the Berkshires -  were you to include some time here in the 'shire, there's a bunch of us who could point you towards / ride with you on a lot of amazing back roads / dirt roads / logging roads, as well as some great climbing, and descending  (and there's some flattish - river path roads too)

Also, for those of you in New York City or on the MetroNorth commuter line, the last stop, Wassaic, is on a rail trail that is a nice 35 miles from Great Barrington and a lot of wonderful riding.  A great day trip (long though).

Nor is D2R2 for those in anything but superb condition and in posession
of mad dirt road skills. It's been said that the 100mi version is the
most difficult ride in North America.

Eh...that's a bit of hyperbole (the hardest 100 in America)...last year, my first doing it, I rode it on a 30lb+ fully fendered IGH Bob Jackson, took a few wrong turns, but easily finished.  That said, I wasn't riding at warp speed, as so many people were; yeah, to keep up with the speedsters, it might be a hard ride, but to do it over the course of a leisurely day...as long as your gears are low enough, and it's not your first long ride / first dirt ride...it's fine (that said, my pal who did it with me registered 11,000' of climbing; compared to out west, sure not that much, but all on New England dirt pitches straight up and down).  It's fun, there are a lot of great people with great bikes there, and the party at the end was lovely too.

That said...I still think there's nicer riding in my neighborhood, Berkshire County.

Perhaps a meetup at the d2r2?

Steve's not wrong that this is a CHALLENGE but the routes and people
are fantastic. If you end the day not smiling, then it's been a very
bad day!!

I just checked this year's information on the D2R2 and it's 40 miles
(the bailout route) or your choice of metric 100K, 115K or 180K. The
115K is new and the routes get tweeked every year. The longer routes
"sell out" first for practical reasons, so if you want to really crank
it, sign up early. For Riv types, it's one of the events most aligned
with folks on this forum. I mentioned Peter Wiegle (who rides by the
way) but the bikes you see are off the charts. Many handbuilt lugged
steel bikes from the best frame builders (Wiegle, Circle A, Iglehart,
Moots, Independaent Fabrication, etc.) things like bamboo and wood
frames, classic 60's - 80's French, British, and Italian, etc. ...
the rest stops are an exercise in bike lust! I generally see a
handfull of Rivs but I never to get to see all the bikes in one
place.

If my bones come together in time, I'll be there. If you want to come
home with a great story to tell, this is it!

I live on Mount Desert Island and highly recommend the Acadia Carriage

can be reached there most days... or met out on the carriage roads as
the local retrogrouch.

With regard to D2R2... I've ridden the long course the past two years
and wouldn't consider myself in superb condition or to have mad dirt
road skills. I found it to be a nice long ride in the country with
LOTS of climbing. Maybe I'm selling myself short and am a stud in
disguise!

Cultural Regionalism shall rear its ugly head... ;^)

I propose, from the western coastal areas of this continent, that LRLR, as
outlined by ride buddy and always-smiling Carlos D, may vie for that honor.

LRLR = "La Ruta Loca Randonee"

more here:
http://bike.duque.net/2010-lrlr-200k-photos.htm?pic=481

and here:
http://bike.duque.net/2010-la-ruta-loca-randonnee-mixed-terrain.htm

Participation and post-event party is certainly not at the D2R2 levels, but
maybe, someday, you'll be able to say - "I knew about that when no else had
heard of it..."

- J

(and FWIW, Carlos is a strong rider.)

+1. there's something for everyone at D2R2, and one can ride as much,
or as little as they want. there's always a bailout, regardless of
which route one takes, and it's the kind of ride where you don't mind
the hard efforts because you're constantly rewarded with scenery and
good company.

The appeal for me is the festival atmosphere after the ride. everyone
is geeking out on bikes, eating good food and having a great time
after an amazing ride.

I'm in Litchfield County but very often drive up to Sheffield to ride
through Berkshire County and would agree, it's fabulous. Lightly
travelled back roads and a high tolerance for bicyclists for the most
part. All sorts of roads from flat to rolling to lots of hills.
Between, Litchfield, Berkshire, and Columbia Counties, it's a whole
world of local riding. Even in winter (uh, but not this last
winter....)

There's a group of us in South County riding Thursdays and Saturdays, very mellow rides, lots of dirt, lots of hills, good views, and always a fine (carried) lunch - email me offlist if you'd like to join (we often go into Connecticut / Litchfield County - Canaan mountain Rd from Norfolk, one of the best rides around here).  Ron

I'm in southwestern CT (Norwalk to be exact) and might be able to join for a bit.
Originally from RI, so I know and have visited a lot of the places on the "Maritime" segment, but not on a bike, so it would be very interesting.
The traffic isn't so bad along the "shore" in October.
Keep us posted.

Pete:

The only traffic we're likely to experience will be Day 1 heading out
of Boston. From my experience, once you get outside of Boston along
the South Shore, the snarl rapidly morphs into pure charm... the
smells of the ocean overtaking the senses. We could probably catch a
bus onto the Cape, but I'd much rather approach it from Plymouth and
pedal over the bridges... and then once you hit the bike trails of the
Cape, the pure charm morphs even further into pure bliss.

I'll keep you posted.
