Look at what I stumbled across on Flickr... A Bombadil with asymmetrical stays...

I remember reading somewhere that the stresses on the chain stays are unequal, so the asymmetrical stays make engineering sense, I think. I'm not an engineer.

I am also not an engineer, but this is an interesting topic to me.  If anyone has a link to an article or paper describing the different forces on the rear triangle in a traditional road bike please post it.

Also, I wonder if assuming the forces are different would the asymmetrical stays create a noticeable effect to the rider?  What about different sizes of chain stays or seat stays on each side?

I'm no engineer either, but that is totally tentacular, tripendicular,
and bombadilious...

NICE BIKE!!

Thanks guys. It's a great ride. Cat's Homer is lovely, too. Been too busy riding them to get proper photos, but we'll have a set up at some point.

Remember Grant posting that the stays on the new mystery bike were the
result of a poorly interpreted sketch he'd sent the frame builder?
Maybe that sketch was for a proto Bomba? Anyway, that's one Huge
Bike! Scroll thru the rest of the photos & you'll find Hilsen details
(but not the whole bike) and a lot of photos that look European.
Could there be some really large Rivendells wandering the back roads
of the old continent?

Regarding the structural considerations of the stays, unless someone
comes up with a compelling argument to the contrary, I'm going with
"just for the fun of it". They must be OK if that big guy can ride
that big Bomba. And the cool factor cannot be denied.

Hope I didn't out your bike before you were ready; I just found it fascinating...  quite lovely.   Looking forward to more of it....

No, not at all—I'm amused that you found it so quickly. Does that mean I'm not the only one who types "Bombadil" into Flickr every now and again? I was just waiting until we had photos of the completed bikes so I wasn't teasing people...

Keven did ask me to hold off sharing, but I think he meant until the tentaculars had been revealed on the HS bike. Hope no-one is annoyed.

It's an amazing bike to ride, on the weekend I loaded it down with a moderately stupid amount of stuff, just to see how it was. I wasn't able to discern any negative effects on the ride or handling. My previous bike was fine with a commuting load, but any more and it was 'noodly as'. Don't think that's going to be an issue with the Bomba!

Cat really likes her AHH, too. More fullerer reports coming soon.

Might explain why my Bombadil had to make a post-paint return trip to Waterford before they had the clearances at the grand-junction of the right rear drop-out resolved. By not meeting up with another pair of stays back there, the clearance issues are nil, and the brazing and finishing is a little less labor intensive I imagine. (Still though...) Either way is right, neither way is wrong, but the swoops are certainly more playful. Great bike Tom, and looking forward to more photos. (And I might have to add it to the poster...)

What were the clearance issues? Cassette/chain vs. extra stay?

I'm enjoying the swoops too. It's one of those features that draws comments from bike geeks, but flies under the radar of normals.

I'm running a 7sp freewheel on the Phil-Rivy hub out back, and yes, it was a bit tight when the chain tried to hit the high gear. I think they had to crease the inside of the chainstay to make room.

Uh, guilty... I frequently search on Bombadil, amongst others... lol...

Keven, if you're reading this, I didn't mean to spill the beans!    ;)

Thrilled to hear how it handled the weight.

Out of curiosity, is that a 68?

Yep, 68. PBH is 100 cm.

hey, i'm not the only one here with a triple digit PBH!   Nice bike, and would be fun to swap a ride on this for one on my 72 AHH!

Sounds great, next time you're in Australia (or Germany), let me know!

BTW, I love the cork spacer for the fender.  I might just steal that idea next time I have my bike apart. :-)
