I have a 2007 Rambouillet.  It came stock with Araya 540 rims and Shimano 105 hubs (as did many, if not most Romuli).  They've been decent, sturdy wheels.  Not to heavy, stayed true, etc.  Today I had a fall (not a crash) which resulted in warping the rim.  I was able to put the wheel on a truing stand and get it fairly back to normal after about 30 minutes of messing with it, but I noticed that four or five of the ferrules on the drive side spokes look to be slightly uprooted from the incident, so the rim is permanently compromised.  I'm sure I could ride it for thousands more miles without incident; but, I've always thought about "upgrading" to theoretically better rims.  I don't really want all new wheels, so I'm thinking of doing rim swaps on my wheels.  So...

Anybody have any recommendations for rims you've used that you're super happy with, or notice some ethereal improvement in performance, braking etc. that I should consider?  In doing a rim swap, I'd be attempting to keep the spokes as-is, so a very similar profile would be in order.  Rim reviews are always highly variable, but as RBW Owners Bunch members, your experiences and bikes might be more similar to my usage than, say, the carbonated racers or extreme downhillers.

Haven't used Araya's, supposedly pretty good rims, though.  When I'd contacted Rich about wheels when building up my Rambouillet, since I'm not a little fella, he suggested that instead of going with their current recommended Synergy's, that I should like the Velocity Dyads... he's absolutely right, I really love 'em, FWIW....

Velocity A23 are the hot new rims:  http://www.bikesonline.com/velocity-a-23-700c-32h-black-silver-with-machined-sidewall.htm

Here is a set for muy cheap ($11 shipping, too!):

If you want heavier/stronger ones, I can't say enough good things about Velocity Dyads:  http://www.bikesonline.com/velocity-dyad-700c-32h-silver.htm

I've had very good luck with Velocity Aeroheads--rode them halfway across the US and in PBP 2007 without a single problem.

I appreciate the suggestion.  Too bad these don't come in all silver.  I really don't like black rims, at least on my Ram...

I hear ya'.  That's what's keeping me from pulling the trigger on them, too!

Rich L. at Riv has a clutch of silver A23s that he special ordered from Velocity. He can build them for you.

GREAT to know!  He also has 36 hole 650B Dyads which as far as I know are the only ones to exist!  Built me up a wheel a few weeks ago.

IMHO some of the best rims available are also among the cheapest- Araya, Alex, Sun. There are way too many expensive but inferior rims- and other components- on the market testing the theory about fools and their money.

why would you want a 36h 650b wheel?... the smaller wheel with a beefy Dyad rim is pretty sturdy.  You gunna be moving refrigerators?

There is a new 23mm rim on the market that's supposed to be top notch and it comes in polished silver.   http://hplusson.com/index.php?/tb14/

I'm about ready to build a new set of wheels for my Ram and I'm planning on using these.

Interesting find. I hadn't heard of these. They are about the same weight as the Velocity Synergy but with a more classic look (the A23 is considerably lighter). Let us know how your build goes. And please post some pics.

That's a 700C rim, according to the web site.

DaveI have two wheel sets with Open Pro Rims that have proven to be both light and strong.  Many, many miles on both of them.  I now weigh 190 and so use 36 in the rear and 32 in the front.  Decades ago, at 170 lbs,  I raced on Open Pro rims at 32 & 28 spokes with no problems.  They come in black or silver and both look nice.  I hear you about black and use to feel that way too, but have found that some parts look fine in black.

While your at it, why not upgrade the hubs too.  I moved from the Araya/ 105 combination on my Rambouillet to Open Pro / White Ind two years ago and haven't done anything to them, other than cleaning and checking.  Btw, my Araya went pretty much like yours. I hit a curb while trying to avoid a dog.
