I hope it is OK to ask this question here.... it is not a RIV bike but I very much utilize rivish parts.

I am thinking about getting a road only set of wheels and tires for my 2009 LHT.  I am going to ride some brevets with a local rando group.  I currently run some Conti Contacts 1.75 on the stock rims alex/XT rims.  I am lazy and do not want to change tires.  I realize the gain in speed by the wheelset will be minimal with the pig iron bike I am riding, but I need all the help I can get :-).

I am leaning toward Schwalbe Supremes for tires- but what rim and hub to use?  Synergy or Areohead look good but what about Mavic?  I am not looking to spend a bundle here, but think I would benefit from something lighter and a tire with less rolling resistance.

Thanks in advance.

I would consider a rim of similar width to your existing rims so you don't have to adjust your brakes when changing wheels.

a lighter wheelset can make things feel a little more lively (and that
counts!), but i agree that any gains will be minimal. you might be
able to drop a pound or so with tires/tubes and another pound and
change with wheels - but that will definitely come at a cost if you're
trying to shave serious weight.

the only time i really notice light wheels is during aggressive
acceleration and fast climbing, which hasn't been a factor in any
brevet i've ridden. and at mile 100+, i don't care what wheels i'm
on. but, if you're looking to shed some weight off the bike, the
wheels are a good place to do it.

I built some lightweight wheels for my 26" bike using Sun ELQ21 rims. They are the lightest welded 26" rim I could find and they were pretty affordable. 32h only, and black with machined sidewalls. 770 series XT hubs are competitive weight-wise with many much pricier hubs. I also suggest Kojak tires and lightweight tubes.

Good to know about those rims. I've been using a hoard of Sun M14A
rims that have been bulletproof at about the same weight or a bit
under but they are narrow at 19 mm outside to outside. So far no
problems with the 35 mm Kojaks, but 32 mm Paselas felt weird if the
pressure dropped even a bit too low.

FWIW, I built my wheeset with Ultegra until I rebuilt it with Surley/SON.

Jim: any sign of the new hollow axle-cum-shoulder/bearing assembly for
the Surley flip flop hub?

I meant to add that, built up with Ultegra 8 sp hubs, the bare wheels
weighed in at just over 1500 grams the pair -- honest weight on a mail
scale, no skewer but with rim tape -- and again, they were bullet
proof.
