Hey group,  I know a QB is an intended SS,   BUT.. if you were contemplating making it an ON THE SADDLE, multi speed,   and not an off the bike dingle,     what are some options/ideas?    Thank you in advance!!   -Mike

Some have done bolt-on derailleur hanger conversions. Problem Solvers makes a neat one that's part chain tensioner, part derailleur hanger. But the best way to do it is probably to get some sort of IGH. The biggest issue is dropout spacing. Most IGHs are 130-135 mm, while the QB is 120 mm. Cold-setting is the obvious solution, but you may be reluctant to bend an expensive frame. Personally, if it was mine I'd either do a Sturmey Archer 3sp (maybe with 2 chainrings) or I'd sell the bike to buy one with gears.

Though all of this causes the Great Cosmic Voice to lift up its massive, shaggy head and cry: "Why!!??"

You've got thousands of multispeed bicycles out there in the greater world. You've got several Rivendell multispeed models, from all-out, heavy-duty off road to club-fast. You have one, perhaps two, single speeder models, neither any longer in production. Oh! Ponder, ponder, ponder, ponder ...

Is this the same Patrick Moore who's always looking for weird cogs to make his own cogsets?

AlfineBeam is awesome! I highly recommend it. Mine is with Bullmoose bars. I had the rear respaced  and cold set to 135 mm ( if that's the right terminology.) the QB has ride qualities that make it special independent of how many gears it has. So figuring out a good way to gear it was a high priority for me too.

I can highly recommend the S3X. I've had great luck with this hub on two bikes: Quickbeam and Patrick's former Motobecane.

I like the S3X. http://www.biketinker.com/2012/fine-bikes/state-of-the-quickbeam-3-3-12/
I'm about to put it back on the Quickbeam, along with the fenders.

I too fall in the camp of why?  This is a great single speed bike why change it?  My answer would be sell it and buy a bike designed to be multi speed.

Actually I can see that a hub gear either fixed or free makes sense, given the dropouts. I guess that cosmic voice that is continually buzzing in my head is having at least small second thoughts. But I can't see putting a derailleur, front or rear, on it.

You can also do a hybrid IGH/muti-ring crank.  Here's mine that I just finished (Not a Riv, but Rivish)  http://tinyurl.com/ce9aosc  Alfine 8 in back, 28/48 in front.  Rides nice.   An SA 3 speed with a triple up front would give you a nice range too.

There are also 2-speed options (that don't require cold-setting or chain-tensioners):

- Sturmey Archer makes the 2-speed S2 Duomatic Kickshift hub with 120mm spacing... and provides direct drive in 1st gear and a +38% 2nd gear - This costs about $75 and comes in coaster or non-coaster, and 32/36 hole configurations.  (I have one of these waiting to be laced up)...
- FSA makes the Metropolis Patterson 2-speed internal geared crankset.  This provides direct drive in 1st gear (28 tooth chainring) and a +57% 2nd gear (44 tooth chainring equivalent).  It is a full crankset and includes the bottom bracket.  It fits a standard 168mm BB shell.  (I have this on my SimpleOne and love it... to me it never stops feeling like a single speed; but I have an expanded range of terrain I can now ride without dismounting)

Ah, so many options...  but in the end, there's nothing like the simplicity of a single speed (he said as he pondered further.. hmmm... what would it be like to combine the Duomatic with the Patterson???  hmmmmm mbwaahhh!!!)

I'll second these suggestions and throw in the Schlumpf counterpart to the Metropolis/Patterson: http://www.schlumpf.ch/hp/schlumpf/antriebe_engl.htm

And, in case there is was any confusion, the S2 Duomatic kickshift doesn't have a coaster brake, the S2C does.

hi
i put derailers on my quickbeam. it was easy just use an adapter to add a rear derailer and use a phil or paul 5sp 120 hub or any of the ones from the fifties thru the early 80s. i got a nice used 120mm 700c wheel used for 30 bucks at the lbs. i even use the nice silver bar end shifters.
just go for it

I'll throw my hat in the 2-speed internal hub ring. But past
experience with the Sturmey 2SC prompts me to suggest SRAM 2 speed
Automatix. Mine has a coaster brake which I like a lot. 2 speed
automatic transmission works perfectly shifting up and down.

Front and rear der with friction thumbies to make a three speed. Dos Eno in the back, and the original QB Sugino crank in the front. I enjoyed doing a century with this transmission, but at the time I didn't have a bike with gears that was as comfortable. I never had to change a flat during the six months I rode this way, but that would have been a prolonged pitstop...

I switched it to fixed with a new Phil hub rear wheel right after, where it has stayed to this day. I rode the Cape Cod Bike Trail yesterday, and it is still my favorite bike to ride even though my stable has increased since then.

Hey everyone,   thanks for all the responses and ideas.   Might go with some sort of IGH set up.   Either way it will be fun,  and after all nothing is permanent right?   its all just tinkering.   -Mike
