I framed my poster using an inexpensive frame from Amazon. (at $43
it's a lot, but cheap compared to a custom job). It says it uses
acid-free foam core, so hopefully the poster will last in it. The
picture isn't great from my cell phone--and sorry for the glare, but
it fits pretty darn well without any matting and looks good 'nuff to
my eye.

Thanks for that option! I priced framing @ Michael's and it was silly-stupid expensive. I laughed at them it was so ridiculous ($400+).

We went to Michael's too and it was just way too much cost for a poster. This seems like a good option for me and my family. =)

So not to be a moron but the right size for the Riv poster is 18x24?

Yes, 18x24 is what I used.

Wow, I had a custom frame place do it and it was about half of that. I cannot imagine why michaels would be so much more.

I don't know... it was their custom option, not just off the rack.
Still, it stopped me in my tracks! At that point I didn't even check their stock frames I was so pissed.

We have a Michaels in town now, but the older place, Ben Franklin, is where I took mine: buy a frame and the materials (matting and glass), and they mount it for free... Something like $80....   we have nice mom-n-pop custom shops that are more than Ben Franklin, but a lot less than that quote from your Michaels... the Michaels here couldn't stay in business with prices that high, what with the good competition here for a good bit less...

There are some internet-based framing options I'm checking out, too...

I agree. I had a much bigger piece of art framed at a custom shop for about $250 a few years ago. Plexiglas is cheaper and lighter than glass, and does some UV protecting at the same time.

Actually, plexi is usually more expensive. I found that out recently when I got my poster framed.

I went with UV glare-free glass.  Wasn't the cheapest choice, but was a minimal upcharge over regular glass.  There was a 'museum' glass, the stuff literally just disappeared, no idea that there was glass there at all:  VERY nice, but much much more pricey than the non-glare UV glass...

thanks for showing the poster - I was wondering about it.
He's not too sky about copying Mucha.
But so did everyone else.
Cool poster.

I finally had my poster framed about a month ago; I was on the fence for long time.  I know what framing costs in my area as we've had a lot of pieces done over the years.  It will make a difference in price if you choose to mat it.  That's what I was contemplating originally as I was going to put it on a large wall.  When I changed my mind and decided on a smaller wall, I went with no mat.  That opens more doors as smaller frames are cheaper.  BTW, the width is actually closer to 17.75", but I guess it's not much of a problem to use a stock 18" frame.  Anyway, here's what I ended up doing.  I was shopping local antique stores, thinking that I might luck out and find an old frame that I liked with the proper dimensions.  Saw some possibilities, nothing perfect.  I think with enough shopping, this could be done.  I wanted an Arts & Crafts look to compliment the print.  In one shop they were selling framed old-style posters in quarter-sawn oak frames.  I inquired about custom frames and the owner obliged and ordered one from his source (in Montana, I believe).  For the unmatted size, he charged me $65.  When the frame came, I took it to my favorite frame shop, and the owner suggested I go with what he called "preservation" grade framing: acid free board, UV glass, etc.  The poster is dry-mounted to the board, so this is a permanent arrangement.  He put spacers between the poster and the frame so that it doesn't touch the glass.  This is recommended if you don't use a mat.  He charged me $55.  So the total cost was $120 and I'm thrilled with the results as well as the price.  Don't have a pix, but will post one if anyone is interested. Same general look as ttoshi's with different wood.  Cheers, Steve

I would frame it with Brooks leather bartape as the "matt".

I would try to think of something from a bike I could use as the frame...

That could get more expensive than having it professionally framed! You could wrap it around the frame but you can't mat with leather, oils will ruin the poster in short amount of time.

In one of the original threads about the poster, someone had (quite brilliantly) photoshopped a lugged tube frame for the poster.  it's worth searching for if you didn't see it at the time.
