Hi All,
Picked this up off one of the lists a couple months and with the
helped of Recycled Cycles did one of my fastest builds yet (2
months...my Trek project is pushing a year and a half!!). Took it out
on it's maiden voyage this morning. Kind an atypical Riv build these
days..fenderless, fairly light, non-threaded headset, etc. I built it
up with stuff laying around and some newer mid-level Shimano parts.
Ride was fantastic....light, quick, climbed and descended the biggest
hills I could find quite nicely....felt nice. I think we've got
sunshine for a few days so hopefully I'll get in a few more rides. Oh
and no slippage from shifters or back wheel;).

Looks great!  You're right, not the typical Riv build but that is basically the setup I'd go for (assuming Grant would let me) if I ordered a custom Riv road.  Maybe with 47-57mm reach brakes, though, so I could fit fenders + Ruffy Tuffy's in the winter.

Oh.
My.
NICE!

Congrats! That's quite a nice find.

One of the great things about the RBW bikes is that you can dress 'em
any way you want to. Build 'em up perfect and ride until something
else tugs at your aesthetic. Then strip it down and put together all
different. Enjoy and experiment!

Happy/Safe Fourth!

I'd love to know how the original owner got that paint scheme by Grant. Repaint maybe?

Rob-

Very nice build! That is my former bike. It  originally was the same orange as the panel with cream headtube and fill. I had it repainted and kept the orange in the panel as an homage to its original paint. I had the steer tube re-done because I liked threadless better (gasp!).

Here's a link to the original spec sheet if you want to know more about tubing and sizing, etc.

Enjoy! I am so happy it's someplace where it's get ridden!

Rob:

That silver & orange combo is quite striking. Bikes look so good
before we clutter them up with junk to make them utilitarian. That's
a bike that would get me to thinking about stuffing all my crapola in
jersey pockets. Uh-oh, the ice is gettin' thiin...

I agree, that bike with that paint job deserves to remain sunny-day minimalist.

That is so true. Today while riding my new "racer" I put on my only
real biking shorts, put a tube in my back pocket, and wore my old
Carnac shoes! A little different than my ordinary rides. Kind of
nice to have a little variety in the biking routine.

Beautiful bike! I was a day late and dollar short buying that very one, and am glad I "lost" it to a good home! :)

Yeah, I like the colors.  A local builder often uses a similar color scheme on his signature bikes.

Are you using a clamp on/threadless stem on a threaded steerer tube?  I've read that that can lead to the steerer cracking but I don't know personally if that is a realistic concern...

Thanks to all. Previous owner (Joe) did all the color choosing. The
steerer was completely revamped to threadless so all should be good.
Did about 4.5 hours yesterday on the bike and it performed
flawlessly. Only concern is my "racy" saddle...good for a couple
hours then the butt starts asking "where's the Brooks"?

We've never had orange panel decals (the web may prove me wrong on this, but I sure can't remember any, and if we ever did it was another brain ago)....and not many painters could pull it off. It is trickier than mere mortals such as we can appreciate, so my moolah says Joe Bell did it, and yes, a repaint. Silver and orange always look good. Silver/grey---plus orange---plus cream---maybe a little dark blue, but just a little---can look really good. But then there comes a point where it looks tooooo good, and the thoght and effort and concern for color sort of dominates the actual effect. It can happen. That is not the case with this bike, though. I'm with y'all, it looks great.
