Made a few changes to the Bombadil: 55mm SKS fenders with Sackville flaps (early black color), Paul Thumbie/Shimano bar-end on the rear derailer (now an XT), Suntour power shifter on the down-tube for the front derailer (now a Suntour Cyclone Mark II), Mark's rack up front, Headset-mounted bell, Cateye headlight and rear light mounted to a Paul Gino mount, German Ergo grips. Pics here:

Also resurrected the remaining 1984 Trek 620 with some Rivish bits: 700c wheelset with Mavic MA40 rims laced to Shimano 600 hubs, Suntour XC Pro front & rear deraliers and thumb shifters, Nitto technomic stem and Albatross bars, Nitto 83 post with Brooks B67 saddle, Panaracer Pasela 32mm tires, Sugino XP crankset with 24/40 rings and a guard in place of the outer ring, MKS Touring pedals, Shimano brake levers. Pics here:

That's it for the early December projects. Now on to writing cards...

FYI - the 620 is now for sale over on the iBob group. Or send me a note off-list.

Hi Marty,

Nice work on the Trek! I have a 1986 620 and want to convert the 27"
wheels to 700's. Looks like you kept original brakes? Any issues
with making this conversion especially with respect to brakes?

thanks in advance,
Liesl

All I can say is that I tried a set of Tektros on there first, and the spacing of the posts is too narrow for them. Actually, the old Dia-compes work and feel really good - probably even better with modern pads, which I just didn't get to. I had a set of DC 980s on another bike for a while, and I liked those too. Somewhere there must be a data-base or rules regarding post spacing and cantilever types that would be handy here - kind of a go/no-go thing. Nothing wrong with 27" wheels by the way - especially if you can live without fenders, although with the current 700c wheels, this bike could take 35s, maybe even 37s without too much trouble. I'm sure others here have had more experience with this than I have and will weigh in accordingly.

absolutely beautiful color on the bombadil, why did you use the marks
rack instead of a mini front?

Why the Mark's rack? Honestly, I had one on hand, and if the rack fits...
I'm sure the mini would be great too, but the MR is as solid as I'll ever need, takes the Platrack that I also use, and re-adapts to other bikes/locations that the mini won't. (like out back if I'm in the mood)
Yeah, the color is quite nice, even on a gloomy day like we had in Chicago yesterday.
