There's a new world record holder in town, a 100-year old marathon runner!

The inspirational story here.

“The first thing is to get rid of this notion that you're old,” Singh said. “The other thing is, some people die of starvation in some parts of the world, but in western countries people die of overeating. And they don't do enough exercise to burn it off. You eat to live, not live to eat.

“Many people have been inspired enough to get off their backsides, but I'd like more people to do that. It's one thing to say you're inspired, but another to prove it, to actually do something about it. My message to all elders is if you give up, it's going to give up on you.”

An image of Fauja here.

And a positive writeup of the run, with a not so flattering of an image of Fauja here.

p.s. Sincere apologies that this is not Riv related ... It's just a wonderful inspirational story that I thought you may all appreciate.

That's awesome.

There's an OR Randonneurs member who is 66 and has been logging his
cycling miles since 1966 (the year I was born!) when he was 20yrs old.
He's generally one of the faster randonneurs in our club. Here's a
message he posted to the ORR message board the other day:

I started logging my bike mileage in 1966.
Yesterday, on my evening commute, I passed 300,000 miles at about
6:15 pm, 10-12-11 on Springwater Trail bridge over McLoughlin Blvd.

First log entry Jan. 2, 1966. Age 20, club ride, Lytle Creek, 60
miles.
100,000 miles in May 1988. 22 years later, age 42.
200,000 mles in June 2002. Another 14 years, age 56.
300,000 miles in Oct. 2011. Less than 10 years, age 66.

8 years under 3000 miles. Low of 1250 in 1970.
8 years over 10,000 miles. High of 12,546 in 2004.

I should add that he's also run Western States and Badwater
(ultramarathons). It's pretty awesome. I spent much of the second day
or this year's 600k riding with him and it was great hearing some of
his stories. I find this kind of stuff inspiring. I certainly hope to
be doing century rides into my 60s.
