Hey RBW Bunch,

I found the group a week ago and just joined.  Thanks for all of the conversations that helps all of us learn and create a good community of biking.  I came to know Rivendell about four years ago while searching the internet.  I read the philosophy on their website and agreed with it.  I rode my bike everywhere until I turned 16 and got a driver’s license.  After a few years, I decided to get into riding again, went to the local bike store and got a very uncomfortable crunched up bike.  After the Rivendell philosophy, I looked back to when I biked before 16.  I rode my brother’s hand me down GT something that was a “hybrid.”  It was a big bike, but being big it fit me properly.  It was comfortable and it was just a joy to ride.  Rivendell brought me back to the joy of riding of when I was 15.  I don’t have a Rivendell, but I plan on making a purchase in the very near future.  I recently moved to Monterey, CA and only about two hours from RBWHQ.

I am looking at getting a Yves Gomez, Hunqapillar, or maybe a Atlantis.  I commute to work and like to do general riding on the dirt and road.  I can do what I want for riding on all three.  It boils down to how they ride.  I love a mixte and currently favoring it.  I like a Hunqapillar because it is like driving an SUV.  I like the Atlantis because of its versatile qualities and also made in USA.    I plan on heading up in about a month for test rides.

I usually don’t post on forums and more of a lurker. I will give input when I can provide it.

Matt,
You want versatility? Get the Atlantis. Amazing bike.

I too live in Monterey and recently visited the HQ. All I can say is do it. It's worth it.

I like 26-inch-wheel bikes, and if it came down to the Atlantis and the Hunqapillar, I'd probably be relegated to picking the color I like best because they're both great bicycles. Oh, wait..I love both colors! Oy. Fortunately for my checkbook I'm waiting on The Mysterious HS, with an eye towards the production model next year if it turns out to be the townie/utility bike I think it is.

Enjoy your visit to RBW..the gang will get you on the right bike. Oh..welcome!

Thanks for the advice on what to get.  I ended up purchasing a Sam Hillborne, which is what I did not put as an option.  I mentioned a Gomez, Atlantis, or Hunqa.  A Sam met my requirements in a bike.  The Atlantis would have too, but John had his Quickbeam for sale that was my size.  So I went up to Rivendell and bought a Sam Hillborne.  About an hour later I met John and bought a Quickbeam.  So I got a two for the price of one Atlantis.

I built up the bike and here is a glamor shot.  I know there is a little 2TT vs. 1TT debate, but I am indifferent about the matter.  It is a good looking bike either way.  A few comments about building it up.  Don't forget to use something to hold in the Bottom Bracket Tool.  I was screwing down the bottom bracket and slip, clank on the seat tube, and the yell "serenity now" (for you Seinfeld fans).  I have not even ridden the bike and it got its first paint chip.  On well, build up of character in the long run.  A little Testors paint fixed the problem.  Yes, those are power grips attached to the pedals.  I love those things.  Grant checked me out at when I bought them and he verified...are you sure you want to buy these (not an exact quote)?  Putting on the fenders was not too bad except for the extra hole I drilled (oops).  I was able to cover it up with a washer.  Those fenders get you every time.  A Nitto big rack would have looked more pretty than the Tubus Rack.  However, I like the lower pannier attachment capability on the Tubus.  Also, the straight attachment of the rear light with the two holes instead of one (need a extra mount...I know its $7, but you gotta justify).  It is meeting German with German instead of German to Japanese.  However, I am a little hypocritical because I have a Shimano Dynamo Hub powering the German lights.  I swapped the wheel from my old commuter.  I will get a SON in a few years or when my wife gets over me buying two identical bikes (that is according to her...I tried explaining the horizontal dropout and single speed compared to the multigear to vertical dropout.pick your battles).  I look forward to going on my first commute with the Sam on Friday.

Great lookin' bike, Matt.  I gotta admit, I'm liking the new Sam green a lot more in the owner photos that have been posted than in the preliminary ones on the site.  I'd love to see one in person.  Enjoy both of your new bikes!  Steve

Matt, great choice with the Hillborne, and you have it set up wonderfully. Enjoy!  -- Forrest

If those two are the same (to your wife) then perhaps there is still room for the Betty/Yves...!

Congratulations on your bikes!

Nice looking Sam. Wise choice of components. I especially like the stylized "H" (for Hillborne, I presume) that is mounted right at the bend on the left side of handlebar… :)
