I ordered a sandwich from Jimmy John's this afternoon which was delivered in the typical prompt fashion by a heavily tatted and generously bearded bicycle courier.  The courier saw my Atlantis, parked in my office, and became so distracted after ogling the various details that he walked out the door without handing over my lunch.  He sheepishly returned minutes later, bid me bon appetit, and asked a few more questions about how to twine and shellac handlebar tape.  I find the courier crowd generally hard to impress when it comes to bicycles, and briefly imagined myself to be hip.

Darin,

"All Atlantis owners are hipsters under the skin. Mitch Browne"

Good one!

As a multiple-Rivendell owner over the years, I've never owned an
Atlantis, even though it's the Riv frame that is closest to my wants/
needs. My reasoning is simple...I'm not cool enough to ride an
Atlantis, and deep down, I know it. The 1-in-500 cyclist I might
enounter out on the road who would sense the incongruity of "me" on an
Atlantis, and surely pass silent judgement as they rode past!

I'm going with Mitch on this one. I used to secretly yearn to be hip
but found myself on the trailing edge of whatever is cool, so I just
gave it up as yet another unattainable goal. And now I find my choice
of bicycle is cool!

A few years ago, a couple of my touring buds & I were coming down the
Oregon coast, self contained. With 4 bags & more crap-on-the-rack,
it's hard to tell what color a bicycle is, let alone make or model.
We took a break at a park as a crew for one of the big bike touring
companies was setting up lunch for their clients. One guy recognized
my Atlantis, dropped what he was doing & came over to chat about the
bike, our trip, etc., etc. You'd think a guy who works for a touring
company would have seen a lot of bikes but he really appreciated the
Atlantis. My guess is he really wanted to quit shuttling people up
hills, fixing flats and making lunches and just wanted to take off on
his own bike.

To plagiarize Mark Twain: "Get an Atlantis, you will not regret it."

Among the various distinct groups of "cycling misfits" that are drawn to Rivendell, the tatted and pierced anarchist/punker/hipster is well represented. I was going to point this out in the Riv meets Riv in the wild thread, to point out that not all Riv-types have much in common, aside from bike brand choice.

No conversation of Riv-Hip-Ness would be complete without these 2 words... Tall Riv. I haven't seen or heard of one but someone will do it if it hasn't already been done.

And if you are gonna make a tall Riv use the double top tube models to climb up it like a latter.

Tall Riv with Xtracycle--that would be something to see!

I see a fair amount of Rivs around town. I was heading out on my Hilsen yesterday and passed a women riding a Bleriot with Albatross bars. A great bike. I feel like I see a fair amount of Rivs around town. I also feel like I'm seeing more and more LHTs that are Riv'd out.

Can't resist asking, Jim -- in your (I assume better informed than mine, since I've never encountered another Riv of any kind in my neck of the Eastern Meglopolis) view, how many of those distinct groups are there, and can you name the ones other than the "tatted and pierced anarchist/punker/hipsters"? I desperately need to know to which group I belong (raising whispers of Groucho in my mind).

I used the term "cycling misfits" above in the most loving possible way. Almost every Riv owner or fan feels alienated from mainstream cycling in some way. Given the objective weirdness of mainstream cycling, being a misfit in this context is nothing to be ashamed of! You can categorize yourself based on how you don't fit in to the dominant cycling paradigms. I'm not going into specifics.

I always find it surprising that people in other places don't see more Rivs in the wild. I see several per week aside from my job. Minneapolis must be a hotbed of misfits!

I hear there is a really active Rivendell dealer in the Twin Cities;
that may account some for the popularity in that area. :)

"Mainstream cycling" in So Cal is so racer focused that being a
"cycling misfit" actually puts one cloer to the real world.

There are at least 4 Rivs (and one Heron) in Chiang Mai, Thailand. One
I recruited at the local organic farmer's market, one I have never
seen. I ride regularly with the recruit (Paul) and an old-timer Rivver
(Kip) who I saw on this list lived in CM. We also met Doug P when he
came through town, though sadly he didn't have time to ride with us.

Being previously "misfit" is why I got my Rivendell. Finally a bike that fit in size and use.

I'd almost be willing to bet that the majority of the Rivendell bikes in the Twin Cities were not sold by Jim at Hiawatha.  At the book signing, there were a good half dozen Rivendell bikes I've not seen in person before.
