For folks using Albatross bars, and I guess Boscos, what grips are you using? I've got Albas on my commuter and they currently sport some WTB grips but I may soon Albatrossamacating another one of my bikes and I'm pondering grips. I don't dislike the WTB grips and I'm not against cork but just curious what folks are using.

Thanks,
mike

I have cork on all three bikes with Alba bars. I can't say enough good things about them, and if it matters, I get compliments on their appearance at least once a week. Bob (Indianapolis)

I'm all for Ergons, both on Albatrosses, Boscos, and Bullmooses! : )

I'll send photos when I get a chance.

Trade-off is no bar-end shifters, but with Ergons, thumbshifters are very nice.

I prefer taping the A. bars to using grips myself because there are so many hand positions with that bar.

I use the velo orange leather bar wrap. I back wrap it with standard cloth tape. What a pain to wrap and sew it up but it looks the business.

Cork grips for me -- small diameter grips don't feel right with
swept-bar bars. Wrap the front bends with tape if you want the hand
positions (excluding the brake-lever-clamp-between-the fingers,
because the cork and tape are different diameters).

I prefer the appearance of cork grips, but the last time I used them
on A bars, my hand would rest into the notch (median?) between the
fleshy parts of the palm, causing repeated discomfort.

Maybe I should try again -- been a couple years, and the bar position
has migrated.

I like cork grips, but they get dirty quick and I had more than a few sets break on me.

Two alternatives: http://www.esigrips.com

ESI grips are comfortable, very tough (almost too tough - even without adhesive, they are a chore to remove), and clean easy.  Black, silver, and maybe white are the only colors I would recommend. The other colors look really clinical.

While I have never seen anyone else do this. I also had good luck with these track grips: http://www.tracksupermarket.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=78&products_id=457

(Ben's in Milwaukee sells a more modern looking version)

These do not do much in padding, so if that is an issue, avoid.  But they provide good grip, cover more of the bar than most grips, and, imo, look very nice on the bike.  If you can find the traditional cotton infused Strong-G definite best choice.

I have the Ergon Biokork GP1 grips on my Alba-equipped Hunq, http://www.ergon-bike.com/us/en/product/gp1-biokork# Not exactly classic-looking, but it has the cork vibe going for it. The grips are very durable and super comfy for my hands. I never liked the fact that glued-on cork grips are are a one shot deal that have to be cut off if cockpit changes are needed.

I like the cork grips but once shellacked they're a bit too slippery with winter gloves. I use two layers of 'cork' bar tape with a layer of cloth wrapped tightly over the top to make my own grips.

Hi. I like the feel (and look) of the older Brooks grips, like these: http://www.benscycle.net/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=146_230_2113&products_id=2912&zenid=1657a8e913ae6fb92efa0a3a7e99aa13.
I can't help but notice, however, that the price seems to have about doubled from when I bought mine.

I have the ones David linked to on one bike, one thing to keep in mind, IMHO, they provide little cushioning, they look great though, I don't remember them being as cheap though, I picked mine up second hand for still a lot for just grips.

On another bike I have wood dia-compe grips, see here http://www.flickr.com/photos/minhi/6339230370/
They originally were blond but developed a crack, so when I repaired them I restrained in a walnut and shellacked them too. Also no,cushioning at all, but then on my road bikes I get by with just cotton bar tape, nothing under neath.

Both the brooks and dia compe grips can slide off and on easily for cockpit changes.

I'm not a fan of the mt grips on swept back bars, feels strange to me.

I use Portland Design Works Whiskey Leather Grips. Beautiful, comfortable and easily removable for cockpit adjustments...

Another vote for cork. I am, however, fairly new to Albas having started with them only back in October. Still I've logged hundreds of miles commuting and camping since then and find them to be quite comfortable.

Plus 1 on the Brooks Plump/Fat grips. I have them on my S1 with Dove bars, and they are the comfiest feeling thing I've had under my hands yet. I have tried the Riv-Cork and the Ergon but much prefer the Brooks. Much more expensive but if the price isn't too much a consideration …

I had the brooks plump, they were nice but not compatible with bar ends so they went to a better home.

Cork grips with bar end shifters on the Hillborne and cork with
thumbies on the new (to me) Atlantis. The bar end grips have the
groove for the shifter cable and twine wrap holding the cable to the
grips. The twine is the only thing I shellac - the cork cleans easily.

My daughters are in bed after a long Christmas day. Now I can reply. I have Riv cork on three bikes, a Hunqapillar, and two Bridgestone MB3s. The Hunqa has standard cork as does my wife's MB3. My MB3 has BES, and twined notched cork. Like you I shellac the cork, I have learned to not lightly disregard Riv advice, it comes from experience and always saves me frustration. They write to shellac the cork or it gets gray and dingy. It did - I washed it up (as another poster wrote - it washes easily), put on shellac and have had no more problems. The cork on my MB3 has been on the longest - over four years. It has weathered to a dark golden brown that to my eye is beautiful. I can't bring myself to tape the curves on the Alba bars.  How about you - what are those Bosco's attached to? Bob (Indianapolis)

I have cork w/ bar ends on a 'bars and cloth tape on some Bosco's. Both shellac'ed which helps tremendously with the dirt and water. I tried ergots, which w/ the sweep seemed to work better inverted with the extra part faced inward. They were fine, but not necessary. The shellac'ed cork does get a lot of compliments, some folks thinking it's wood, others wondering just what the he'll it is and some folks just admiring. I will say the solid cork from Rivendell seems to hold up better than the scrap cork and glue of other brands. They age very beautifully too.

Bob from Indy: what do you ride?

By the way, I have over 5000 miles on mine and they still look good.  I have shellaced them a time or two.  It only takes a second and it keeps them clean.
