Dent in Seat Stay of Saluki

So I recently acquired a used 58cm Saluki off the List here. I thought
that it would be a good choice because I love the classic look of the
Homer but at $1200 shipped I would be able to save almost 1k. Seller
insisted bike was perfect but when it came it had a ding in the
downtube and a small dent in the chainstay by the BB shell where it
looks like a chain dropped and got caught up in the crankset. Now the
ding in the downtube doesnt bother me because it is really small and
barelly visible but I know the BB is under alot of flex and just hope
that it is gonna be ok to ride this thing long term. I really just
need to be talked down before I flip the frame for 1k and lose 200 or
ship it back to Cali and have the tube replaced and bike repainted and
spend over 500 bucks. Here is a link for the pics I took of the

Just really disappointed that i thought i was getting something I
could ride for a long time and now feeling doubtful about its long-
term viablilty. Any opinions and thoughts would be welcome.

Side-stepping the whole issue of disclosure, that wouldn't worry me a bit.
Chainstays get crimped and recrimped with little effect, and that
indentation is a long way from a crimp. A dimple, maybe, but it's unlikely
to cause any failure.

Such is the beauty of steel.

+1 for 'don't worry about that at all'.  I just acquired a steel frameset in which the steel chainstay is squished so far that the tube walls meet in the middle.  And that's the right chainstay.  It's squished like that to maximize chainring clearance and tire clearance.  It's not the way GP would have done it, but it is totally common.

Yeah, Peter, I've put worse dings than that in my Rawland Drakkar fixed gear to no ill effect. Steel's wonderful that way!

Think of it as extra room for the granny ring.

Seconding the Jim's call out on the disclosure thing, it is otherwise
no big deal. Put some nail polish on it and ride.

The fact that you look to be able ot fit that tire/fender combo should
be anough of an omen to keep it.

Tried that, they said that the bike was "mechanically" perfect and that i was SOL. I can message you offlist if you want his name and address. This is unfortunately the problem with buying anything used, especially outside of a 3rd party like EBay, Amazon, etc. Paypal will only really cover you if you never got anything at all, they really wont help me get a refund for something that was mis-represented since they are only the money transfer people.  It sucks but at least I do have a beautiful saluki. I am gonna ride the hell out of it and get a full respray for my b-day next summer.

Yeah, it seems like it shouldnt be an issue, but just in case my anal
retentive nature gets the best of me anyone ever use Assenmacher
Bicycles in Ohio for a repaint? They seem almost too cheap at $350 for
a two tone job with decals applied

After it's built and a few rides You'll forget it even exists.

There is a big difference between:

A.  Perfect used Saluki for sale

and

B.  Used Saluki for sale, mechanically perfect

Many sellers on the second hand market go out of the way to highlight the mechanical condition and the cosmetic condition separately, to mitigate conflict.

Have you by chance check to see if the bb spindle is asymmetric- You
don't have enough space between the crank and the frame. Maybe you
can flip the bb spindle and fix that problem easy peasy.

You need a nickels width between the the crank spider if you are just
running one ring.

Hmm, I have never heard of that rule before, why a nickel?  For flex? The issue is I really love my campy NR crankset and pedal combo but they do require a campy asymetrical spindle (long end is already on the crank side) which can be hard to find. I ran this same setup on my international with about 1mm space and never had a problem with cranks grinding into the chainstay. I am not a masher and run a IGH setup in the back so dont have to worry about dropping the chain.  Again, not doubting what you are saying just wanting to have more background

A nickel is 1.95mm so you two are probably in reasonable agreement.

I suppose it would depend upon whether pictures were exchanged. If an offer was placed sight unseen and not contingent upon photos, one gouge to the chain stay I could see does not make a bike less than "great." I personally think it would still bear mentioning before the final deal was consummated, but such is the grays of dealing with strangers on the internet. Now, if photos were exchanged and a close-up of the chain stay was conspicuously absent, that I think would merit revisiting the terms of the transaction.

Photos were exchanged, frame was described as perfect.  Like I said I still probably would have bought it but for, like 300 less. It is almost all built up now anyway, if anyone can suggest a touch up paint the color is an having some issues getting a good match. Thanks
