The weather is really nice here at the moment, after a cold spell it's been in the low 20s (Celsius) for about a week, so we went for a ride through the forests outside Cologne yesterday. Because of the season the (mostly unpaved) paths are all covered in leaves and it's impossible to see what you're riding on a lot of the time.

GF stopped suddenly and when I went to see what was up, she had been the victim of chain suck, but ABOVE the chainstay rather than below it. Closer inspection revealed that she had flicked up a stick, which got jammed between the cassette and the spokes, instantly converting her Homer into a fixed gear. So when she tried to freewheel, the chain had been pushed forward and the slack at the top got caught by the tyre and pulled into the gap between tyre and chainstay. No serious damage done, I'm yet to remove the wheel and inspect the inner chainstay but I expect there will be some minor paint scratching. Wheel is fine.

Just thought I'd share this, since it seems like a low-probability way to have a breakdown. See the pic below, sorry about the quality...

Glad to hear there was no damage to the rider!

I hope you mean 20C and not 20F...looks like you were wearing shorts!!

Glad to hear everyone is ok.
Sticks and leaves can be dangerous on paths/trails.

Beware, too, not only of sticks but of flying plastic bags. One windy
day I had an errant grocery bag blow into my lower chain run and
entangle itself in the rd, resulting in a disabled drivetrain (I
managed to limp home in proto-fixed gear style.) I now am very wary of
such flying debris.
