I'm gonna wait until RBW has it in stock and order it from them.  I'll use a long piece of twine, unshellaced, for a bookmark.

Despite loving the convenience of the Kindle, I'm with Bill on this
one. I need a paper copy, just because.

The term "retro grouch" seems sorta funny. "Retro" brings to mind
somehow backing up or returning. The 20th century was good to me, I
like it there, I just never left. And "grouch"? Even if you're in a
bad mood, a minute or two on a Rivendell will fix that. I think I'll
enjoy the book.

I'm probably going to order both ways. One from Rivendell to get a
real dead tree copy, and from Amazon to hopefully tick the ranking
up.

That's pretty nasty, for sure. However, V8 has some great advantages:
it's loaded with electrolytes, seems to work wonders for me with leg
cramps, and around here, at least, you can expect to find it in every
country store no matter how remote. You'll find it in places where Dr.
Pepper is the closest thing to a "sports drink" and Red Man passes for a
snack food.

Definitely going to get a copy of the book.

I can't stomach V8 but I see lots of folks drinking it on brevets. It
supposedly works great for keeping cramps at bay. I've also seen folks
sucking down mustard packets. Again, not for me but seems to work well
for others. I tend to use electrolyte tablets or a bottle mixed with
apple juice and water.

I believe V-8 on a hot day would certainly lead to a reversal of fortune on myself and my bike, not fun. Already pre-ordered book on kindle, good stuff.

Rando Boilermaker, V8 followed by Mountain Dew.

V8 has a vast quantity of salt and potassium, great for hot days.

Too thick and vegetably for hot days though,  some if us have more sensitive stomachs than others,  unfortunately.

I too ordered the book on Kindle - although admittedly I'm just a
lurker (I don't own a Riv - 7 other bikes though). . . I want a Riv
Betty Foy (one of the new frames). . .but just bought a Brompton (dare
I say it - I travel 19 weeks a year) and am in a bike buying freeze
right now. Once we go to Daylight Saving Time, I might be able to
justify it as a commuter;)

The book sounds very interesting and Grant-like - and I'm all for
supporting bike authors:)

Its the salt in the V8 that helps with cramps. A packet of salt does
the trick, too - but pretty nasty.

Book looks good!

Welll...thank you all for being supportive. I am expecting the
mainstream "community" or whatever to pan the book. I didn't set out
to fling arrows, just to promote another approach---which I imagine
most of all of you already know of and to varying degrees are already
practicing----not because it's mine or I say it's good, but because it
works for you. The thing is, we are living in a bubble which
understands the benefits of, say, a little more tire volume and a
little less pressure, or having room to mount fenders, or being able
to raise handlebars by loosening the stem bolt. Nobody here boasts
about sub-6hour centuries, or that kind of stuff. It's more...hey,
let's meet up here and then and have good time riding together.
These aren't original ideas, and I'm not the leader of 'em, and
RIVforum riders aren't the only ones who ride this way...BUT it is not
the face of bicycle riding that gets presented and glorified and
espoused to the innocent adult who goes into a typical (not
Hiawathaesque) bike shop and wants to buy a bike and start riding it.
If that guy (or woman) has money and misplaced faith in the
salesperson, s/he's going to get on a bike looking kind of like a
former pro racer gone to seed.
So most of the book suggests alternatives to this or that, and there's
a bit of good/bad in it.
I also gotta say that I hope when a viewpoint is expressed
that....errr...you don't agree with, that you'll just write
"bullsh*t!" on that page and turn to something that makes sense for
you. The likelihood that anybody reading this will agree with it all
is slim (and the prospect, scary!)
Anyway, racers won't like it, and so...your support here means a lot
to me. I don't assume that support...I mean, I like what I'm reading
now, for sure, but don't hold me to too high-a standard!

It would be really neat if RBW offered GP-autographed copies for a buck or two extra (assuming the publisher allows that sort of thing).  I'd gladly pay the upcharge and I'll even shellac my twine bookmark to go with it.  If I were to get a Kindle to use to read it I'm afraid that would be the slippery slope whereby I would sell my Sam Hillborne, my Saluki, and my beloved XO-3 to buy another modern plastic device like a Trekalized bike.  Besides that, I wouldn't be able to write "bullsh*t!" on  the pages I don't like, although I seriously doubt I'd be inspired to do that.  Hey, even three bucks would be OK by me.

Paper copies will also make nice gifts, especially for someone who's
interested in bicycling but may be put off by the otherworldly look of
the current mainstream.

Unlikely (impossible) that I'd charge a premium for that. More likely,
will wrestle with what to say, whether to customize or just sign my
name, embarrassed about the awkwardness, but willing, and even tho
Amazon (which, as an author, I should say "the blessed Amazon") is
buying them for less than RIV can buy them for, we'll come close to
Zon price, I think. I don't want to make mad other booksellers by
selling too low AND with the signed thing, and then they'd get made
and say Oh Forget It, he can sell them himself...or something. Will
try to balance the stuff.

Definitely a paper copy for me.

Does V8 help when you're riding home from work on Wednesday night and
you're riding so slow that you're sure your tire is flat again but it
turns out that it's just your legs?

Cause that's what happened to me this week. today was fine though.
ride home was no less spritely than usual.

Turning 45 on Tuesday do maybe that's it. Hope not.

I suspect Grant would modestly decline to pocket more than a token
amount for signed editions but if there was a, say $5 upcharge (or
what ever seems worthwhile) that was earmarked to go to one of Riv's
carefully chosen charities, I'd consider that an excellent investment.

FWIW, Powell's in Portland makes many signed copies of new books available in limited numbers, and doesn't (as I recall) charge any more for them than for unsigned books. It's a great way to kickstart sales.

THis is great. Pub--and I got a super publisher--- is concerned that
if I offer signed copies, bookstores will feel competed against and
won't buy, and then the whole thing caves in and (in my words) becomes
one of those things only RIV sells, at which point the pub is bummed
and I'm poison. I'm trying to thinka way to not have that happen. One
way would be to not undersell book storee---obviously. The signing
thing is another something, but I'm not going to not sign books that
I'm asked to sign. The thought I'd like to express, but it's awkward
to even say and sounds counter-something, is "if you plan to buy the
book, buy it at your local bookseller (or bikeshop, but I think many
won't sell it)." But there's no way I'll be sad to see orders here.
I'm in a jumble about this. We'll see how it works. Eric, thanks. G

OR... Tell your pub you'll include a number of signed copies (10% maybe?) with any order a bookstore places. Then everyone's happy. The worst that could happen is you get 100,000 orders and have to sign 10,000 or so books!

This could be a problem. What about the people who want their copy
signed by "A. Homer Hilsen", "
