Good news on the Mystery Bike front -- straightened the bent derailleur hanger and realigned the rear dropouts last night, and I believe I got them both right.  And I got to buy a couple of tools!

So, on with the build.  One question for the group:  Which tire fender combo -- brown Delta Cruisers with cream Longboards, or the sturdy Marathons it came with, and fluted VO aluminum fenders?

The former looks like this:

The latter like this:

And you can sort of see them together here:

First ride tonight!

Looking good! I must say thay I prefer the former combo to the latter, but either way's a winner. Looking forward to the ride report.

Cheers!

Another vote for Deltas & Longboards. I should dress so nice.

Man that is one sweet bike. I know IGH wheels arent really Grant's thing but this bike is the perfect setup for a Rohloff/Alfine hub setup and all day riding. I wonder when us mere mortals will get a crack at this bike? Should I start saving for my B-day present in July?  Oh, and I like the delta cruiser setup, I am just a fan of colored tires, breaks up some of the color on the frame and gives it a "fun" look. Cant wait for the ride reports!

What about a set of Soma New Xpress 700x35c tires in the terracotta/skinwall color scheme?

Interesting. Do you know what they actually measure on a Velocity Synergy rim?

My vote is for the metal fenders. If you go cream fenders u think brown tires would be too much.

So why not go for cell fenders plus marathon supremes.

And if you change your mind about the marathons sell them to me!

Pudge,
I don't have an accurate way to measure them, but I just put a set on my SH last night. Definitely noticeably smaller and lighter (folding bead, so it makes sense) than the 38 marathons, but bigger than the 35 marathon racers I have. I'll ride the bike tonight and let you know how they feel.

Simple cheap vernier calipers can be got at your hardware store for much less than $10.  You'll use them constantly.

I prefer the fluted metal fenders and the Marathons that are on there.  That said, I think you should buy any and every pair of tires that catch your eye.  Of the 6 bikes I currently have (7 if you include the tandem), all but one of them have multiple tire options on the shelf.  I virtually never buy tires to put on a bike.  I buy tires to put on the shelf.  Then, when a bike needs tires, I go shopping on the shelf.  :)

Indeed! Having calipers handy helps to save you from the non-Nitto seatpost that is labeled "27.2" but in actuality is 27.1. That's happened to me. It was an American Classic.

I like Creme Deltas but.......regular black marathons are tough reliable tires....for more performance get Supremes best tires out there IMO.

Tried the Soma New Xpress tires tonight at 60psi (they say 90 max), and they were pretty nice. Back tire wasn't going all super-squish even at the relatively low pressure. I purposely ran over a lot of rough stuff and they soaked it up much better than the 38c Marathon Greenguards I was running before. Anyway, nice tire and something to maybe consider. Super pretty as a bonus.

Tom:

I really like the fluted fenders, and either tire could work, but I'm a softie for the browns.  Can't wait to see that ... better yet, can't wait to RIDE that!!
