Cyclists and Pedestrians in Copenhagen

Guy mounts a camera on the dashboard of his car, so he can capture cyclists who "plow through pedestian areas" and "go up one-way streets the wrong way" and...

I have to admit, I stopped reading after that.

Why is it worse for a driver to do this than for a cyclist to do this?
Why is it acceptable for cyclists to misbehave in traffic? I get flack
from drivers from asshole cyclists, both kids near the university and
especially or stupid roadie groups. I personally would dance with joy
if someone cracked down on idiots on bicycles.

 Rather than stir up an argument here-  and since this thread began with recommended reading-  I would just like to recommend a couple of books that would answer your question, and perhaps add some perspective to the whole idea of mounting a camera on the dashboard of an _automobile_ to illustrate the 'pinch' that pedestrians are feeling from bicycles.

"Stop Signs:  Cars and Capitalism", by Yves Engler and Bianca Mugyenyi,

And

"Collapse", by Jared Diamond, which might fairly be viewed as the sequel to "Guns, Germs, and Steel", and which will both fascinate and scare the shit out of you, if you have a pulse.

NYT knows such an article will generate quite a lot of buzz in the cycling community, garnering them page hits and ad revenue (etc etc etc).

If you read that article, you'll see it's an organization with a 2000/yr budget. My lord, have any of you worked in a nonprofit? Lattes cost 6 dollars in copenhagen. The guy is a hack volunteer, there is no problem in copenhagen with the bicycle in any way not to be expected of the dominant mode anywhere else (cars here), and the NYT is successfully trolling both the cyclist community and the bike lane haters of US metropolitan areas.

Waste of time all around.

I am the first to defend my rights to bicycle on the roads against
agressive motorists, but a knee-jerk reaction to criticism of cyclists
both angers and saddens me.

1: known to all bicycle bloggers etc
2: 2000 isn't going to do anything but pay for a single run of fliers-it's his annual budget
3: I studied in CPH and worked with their transport department.

OK, I at least tentatively withdraw my accusation; peace. But I've
heard truly kneejerk cyclist reactions of the sort I accused and,
having seen OTOH truly stupid if not criminal cycling behavior, and
having gotten earfuls from outraged motorists who'd like to lump me
into the same categories, it really angers me when cyclists make a
priori assumptions of cyclists' innocence and motorists' guilt. Again,
I've seen enough of both sides to have reasons for my attitude.

Tho' I am not *always* right in every instance.
