What's the process?
Is it powdercoat, or some other way?
What type of clearcoat do they put on it?

They have a video on the website showing the standard process

Love that video...

FWIW, if you get a custom, or opt for the paint upcharge, Joe Bell then does them.

Interviews from the RR w/ Joe are here:

My favorite part of that video is the seattube panel. He eyes it quickly, then..BAM. The decal is on perfectly. Amazing.

Rivendell frames are sourced from various builders and countries of
origin (US, Japan, Taiwan), in addition to the custom frames made
specifically for a customer. I'm quite certain that these various
sources have their own proprietary methods of painting and finishing
the frames that they build. A bike frame made by Waterford in
Wisconsin does not have the same paint and finishing process used by
Toyo in Japan or a Taiwanese frame. The custom frames may have
something identifiable as a "Rivendell" process, but I think they're
the only ones.

This is incorrect. All production frames are painted by D&D; the customs by Joe Bell.

My Rivendell Road Standard, one of the original Rivendell bikes was
painted by Waterford - so I'm afraid that you're not entirely correct.

That was a long time ago. The OP asked how they're painted now. I don't know why you're telling people that painting of Rivendell frames is handled by the shops that build them. Grant specs them, unpacks them, and has his painters paint them.

You are correct as it pertains to current models (
http://www.rivbike.com/kb_results.asp?ID=91 ). Rivendell has evolved
their painting processes over the years, however, and some earlier
frames were not painted as they are currently.

My '97 Road Standard was painted by Joe Bell. His painting steps are shown here:

Actually, the way I read that segment, it's not entirely clear that D&D do all the stock frames. Pertinent to the discussion is the header of the segment - Custom Paint FAQs. I take it to mean that if you want a custom color, then stock frames go to D&D. I will be surprised if stock colors on stock frames also go to D&D, especially for the frame/forks from Taiwan (very likely cheaper to paint there). But these are merely guesses (not terribly educated ones even!).

One could just call the nice people at rivendell tomorrow and ask them.  I have bothered them about minor stuff before and they have always been nice about it.

If I'm not mistaken, the OP has a Bleriot, as do I.  Photos of Bleriot production that are available on Cyclofiend's Bleriot page show a rack frames after painting, and also forks drying.  I haven't reread the article, but I would be very surprised if Bleriots were not painted at the Taiwan factory.  It's an interesting academic question, but the paint quality on my Bleriot seems to be excellent.  Just my 2 cents.  Steve

Yes, I have a Bleriot.
I get blue paint coming off on rags when I use alcohol on parts of the frame to clean it. The paint still looks cherry, though. I don't get it.
I would think there would be a clear coat over the paint so this doesn't happen. But I don't know.

I would call Riv, but I have been emailing them with alot of questions over the last few months about their bikes, and I don't want to bug them.

This could be the guy who painted my new blue Sam. Or it could be somebody somewhere else. The paint is beautiful. All the little windows are creamed in the lugs just like in the video. The clear coat is glossy and smooth everywhere on the frame. This was not the case on my old orange Sam. There were areas on the underside of the frame, around the kickstand plate where there was not full paint coverage. And there were rough areas in the main tubes where there was not full coverage of the clear coat. Both frames were made in Taiwan. Presumably by the same company. But I have to wonder if they were painted in the same facility.
