What is the minimum rim width that will bear a 32 - 35 mm tire safely?

I run 32s on 19 mm (outside) rims; heck, I used those rims for 1.95s
too, back in the day. But a 23 or so rim is probably a bit better --
at least, more forgiving of lower pressures (tho' I run the 31 mm
Kojacks on those narrow Suns at about 55/50).

Like Patrick, I run tires that measure out at ~35mm (WTB Slickasaurus) on 19.5mm Open Pros with nary a problem in terms of fitting and safety.  Only issue for me is getting caliper brakes to open wide enough for the tire to pass through.

Thank you, patrick. I just measured and have 19mm. I want to mount 32 Paselas.

I also run 35 Marathon Supremes on Open Pros. Never had a problem. I just mounted the 40 Marathon Duremes on the Dyads that are a bit wider. Will be testing those in the next few days.

You should be fine.

I have Riv's "Jack Brown" Blue Label 33.333mm width tires mounted on
Mavic MA-2 rims (Inner Bead Width: 13.8mm, Outside Rim Width:
20.3mm). The Mavic MA-2 700c/622mm 36 hole rims were re-sized to a
26" 32 hole mountain bike rim by Keith Bontrager in the day, so I
assume it should handle a 700c tire up to 35mm (properly inflated -
NOT under-inflated!). Jan Heine also used the Mavic MA-2 rim for his
tests of the Grand Bois 32mm Cerf tires.

I wondered about this also when I received my Open Pro rimmed wheels
for my SimpleOne. I mounted what I had laying around, Panaracer
Paselas (700x35) and pumped them up to 80 psi. I'm thinking of making
a switch to a more flat proof (but not heavy) tire for commuting on
glass strewn streets. 700x35's are the lower limit for me at 258
pounds IMHO. I love the Marathon Supremes in the 700x40 size on my
geared bicycle but they are too wide for the Open Pro rims I think.

I'd put 40mm tires on just about any rim. My mtb tires are 50mm, on
rims that are 19mm inside-to-inside. 40mm tires would let you run
pressures like 45/70 (front/rear), rather than the 60/90 you get from
35s.

Philip, that calculator is great! I'm going to use it all the time.
Thank you, that hard work is appreciated!

I didn't do much. Dave Adams allowed me to publish his spreadsheet
because I'd extended (with permission) the Berto graph from Bicycle
Quarterly and put it on a blog.
http://www.biketinker.com/2007/bike-resources/optimum-tire-pressure-35mm-tires/

In any case, use it in good health!
Philip
