At around 6:15 on my commute back from work in San Jose. I stop by
safeway to grab some food to cook at home. I decide to take a quick
stop at target so I lock my bike up to itself with a 12 pack of
ginger ale and 5 pounds of ribs in the front basket. I come back. And
my bike is gone. ribs and ginger ale on the floor. Soo sad. If anyone
sees this bike on bart tonight or on craigslist please contact me off
list. Getting in contact with the police right now.

Most noticable feature would be the double wrap cotton handlebar wrap

Bike theft feels like a personal attack, a violation. Makes it hard to park some places in the future. Inspires thoughts on what they used to do to horse thieves. I will look for it in my part of the country, just in case it makes it out here.

I write because this is all I can do. For those that were wondering I
locked the bike to itself with a kryptonite lock. While I may have
lost a really great bike. I haven't lost the memories that I've had
with it. I feel more guilty then mad or sad considering that way I got
the bike in the first place. For those that don't know this bike was
bought from a forum member founded on craigslist. The story can be
found on Jim's website:
http://www.cyclofiend.com/cc/2009/cc745-manuelacosta1209.html

Granted this bike went through a lot. I'm still not giving up on
finding it, but I guess thats what happens to bikes. No matter how
meaningful they are or how many great memories you have with your bike
all in all it's just a tool. A thing that helps you get from point a
to point b. Don't get me wrong. I loved my bleriot and believe me it
was well loved. But I can't be caught up being sad. Bikes get stolen.
No matter how many wonderful memories and great stories I've had with
the bike. I just have to move on. Hopefully I can find it. If not,
it's not a total lost. I got some good mileage out of the bike. Tons
of pictures. I'm more upset that I'm not going to be riding as much.
If you see it please let me know. Would love to get this bike back.
I'm fairly confident that I might just get the bike back. Not plenty
of 49 cm 650b teal Bleriots in the Bay Area. I'm pretty sure it will
show up. I've gain a good amount of bike karma for this bike to come
back.

Manny, that's such a bummer about your bike. You got a great attitude
though which will clearly help you move on. If the bike doesn't find
it's way back to you I hope you're able to get back on the road soon.
And yeah, while it's a bummer it was stolen, like you say, you
definitely got your money's worth out of it. Keep us posted.

Oh on a funny note the thief whoever it was when they took the bike
they left a bike there. So after a brief talk with with Target
security I needed to go home. So I strapped my 12-pack ginger ale to
the frame to off I went. To my dismay the bike was as well taken care
of as my sweet bleriot and both of the brakes were broken beyond
repair. Foot brakes are fun when they are your only source of
stopping.

Pictures proved it happen:

Manny,

I almost feel like I know you because your posts are always so conversational and full of pictures. Most of my posts are dorky gear related Qs and comments so you likely don't feel the same towards me. That's beside the point though. I feel for your loss. Every time I hear about a stolen or stripped bike, I get a knot in my stomach. I think it's an empathy pain. I completely understand your statement about feeling guilty. I'm the same way. "If I had been more diligent...." I truly hope you get your bike back. And that whatever happens you're not stuck on the brakeless Red Barron Roadmaster for too long.

What's weird is if the thief arrived by bike, they left on foot carrying yours.
Or maybe they have mad skillz in defeating bike locks.

That sucks, man.  You may have already heard this, but try making the rounds of the flea markets around the area this weekend, esp. the one near Downtown Oakland, I think it's at Laney College.  They're a common clearing house for stolen bikes.  Bring a couple of burly friends.

Hey Manny,

As I've already mentioned on the Facebook group, I'm really sorry to hear about what happened to your Bleriot.
I hope your bike will be recovered and the lousy opportunist thief gets his well deserved karma.

I was wondering.  Does that Target have security cameras covering the front of their store?  If so, they may have caught something on tape that might be helpful.

I wish you luck, and commend you on your positive outlook on this shameful event.

Take care.

Manny,

Wow, these stories always scare the heck out of me. It reminds me
that things are different here then other countries. I was in Europe
last month and most folks do the lock-bike-to-itself (if they lock at
all), and no-one gives it a second glance. the fact that someone took
out your groceries and presumably carried the bike off while in front
of a busy target is just messed up.

great positive outlook, in the end it's just a bike, and most of us on
the list are fortunate enough that we can absorb a hit like this both
financially and spiritually, thanks for putting things in perspective.

Oh man, I just saw this thread. Terrible.

I think Manny's Bleriot, in the many ride and camping threads in which
it starred, gave me more vicarious enjoyment than any other bike. Like
all of us, I'll miss it.

I once recovered a stolen bike by seeing it parked in front of a store
(probably an unwitting purchaser), I hope the same good luck for you.

I want to thank everyone for the amazing support with my lost bike.
Still out looking for it. Hoping for the best expecting the worse.
But
still everyone here is amazing. I got tons of emails from people
willing to "loan" me a bike to get me back into riding. While I'm
thankful I still have plenty of bikes to ride. While they aren't very
Rivendellish I can manage. My students by far are the most
supportive!
One of my students drew me a booklet about what happened to my bike.
They even stapled my STOLEN leaflets on to their backpacks to look
for
it! Thank you again for all the kinds words.
Pictures proved that my kids care:

Manny...this just sucks on a gigantic proportion. I will add to the list of people when I say your posts/rides/reports are one of the best inspirations and always get me pining for the saddle. I think my heart sank more in hearing your bike was gone than if had it been mine.

I would also be willing to loan you the X0-3 I have for sale till you get the Bleriot back or for as long as you need it. It's a bit bigger, but not terribly. 55 top tube, 52 seat tube, @765 standover. You would need a saddle, but otherwise complete. If you need it, say the word.

I'm in but not for a frame (I have a 61 cm Bleriot stashed and that's too big).

If this gets rolling I'll go check out the parts stash and see what I've got.

Off the top of my head this is what I recollect about the collection:
I know I have chainrings, I've got some cranksets but those are 175's.
I have some 9 speed brifters for double chain rings.

A mighty fine idea, Happy Holidays!

Fair enough, Joe! Let's start by tracking down a 49 Bleriot. It was
in the QBP catalog for a while. I'll bet there's one stashed
somewhere. Hold off on the parts offers, but post back if you turn up
a frame. If we find one, we can go from there.

As an aside, I wouldn't expect the same treatment. By the number of
posts in this thread, I think more than a few of us have the sense
that this is a special case. Manny adds so much to the list through
his pictures and stories, and he seems to embody the Riv philosophy so
well. Manny, I guess you've become the accidental Riv poster boy!

Best, and sorry if I offended anyone with my off the cuff idea.

I don't know Manny, other than his posts, but he must be a great guy based on the 5- 10 folks that have made parts offers. If it were a local guy that I knew someone who needed this type of help I , also, would offer to help. Maybe I'm wrong, but I get the impression that he can afford to buy a new/used replacement nor has he asked for assistance - other than helping to locate the stolen bike.
This is certainly not in anyway a negative statement towards or about Manny. I hope I could be the same type of person that had friends that would offer to do this but, damn, there are organizations in every community that refurbish bikes for homeless and poor kids that actually need our spare parts.

Oh boy, I should remember this is the Internet and not the pub. Didn't
mean to start a philosophical discussion on altruism. My thinking was
just: 1) wow, Manny really loved that bike, and he's a great member of
this community, 2) that's a rare bike, and maybe we can get a line on
finding him one to buy, 3) man, I'll bet we have enough parts we'll
never use to build it back up, and 4) building it back with goodwill
might help offset the lousy loss,a nd not in a monetary way.

Please direct any other posts regarding this to me joeb...@gmail.com
off-list, please! If a Bleriot turns up for sale, I'll let the
list/Manny know. Also, sorry Manny if you or anyone else thought I
implied you were asking for our help. I still think it might turn up,
too, if we all keep our eyes peeled.

Best and happy holidays!

I have a Nitto Moustache bar I can throw in the pile, if that's what
Manny wants. That bar can come with an ITM Eclypse stem if any fits
(I assembled a small collection while finalizing on length); this is
really stiff chromed steel stem although the quill is the standard non-
Nitto Technomic (short) length.

I'll also offer to build wheels if components are available. Probably
not Rich quality, but I've built most of my wheels and a set of
Campagnolo/Aerohead wheels is surviving a 200+ pounder friend without
issue.

I have deleted my thoughts on this subject, but I guess people still have them in their emails. My caveats were well-intentioned, but not well received, and I retract them.

I have some Silver-style Tektros that have the longlong reach. I could throw them in if/when we find a frame.

We(RIV) have inconsistently and always privately, but many times in
the past come to the aid of hard-luck victims.Details irrelevant and
varied with the situation, but let me understate that we've never
profited from anybody's bad luck.
It is always done privately for exactly the reasons that Joe B.
mentioned. And the OTHER Joe B's idea was super, too. Those Joe
B's....sharp guys!

Some facts:
Another one of you has generously privately told me he's good for $X
toward a Mannybike.Too much.. Amounts not important, but Manny is
Manny, and if you think he's cool on the forum, you should know him in
person. Almost bottom line is that Manny will be a-wheel again, and
anybody who would like to be apart of it can send parts or $15 checks
(not online, no credit cards---although it would abe easier for you,
it would complicate things on this end immensely), to
RBW
Box 5289
Walnut Creek, CA 94596

attn: Mannybike

This is not a normal solicitation for funds. Send NOTHING, and Manny
will be fine--that's a promise. But this is a special case for a
special guy, and how can a special bike not be more special when so
many nice people are a part of it? So we will accept checks (made out
to Rivendell) until January 2. Not postmarked by then, but received by
then. The parts contribution offers are good, but there's a high
likelihood that there will be duplicates, and then if Manny ever posts
pix of his bike (not unlikely), if your part didn't make it, you gunna
wonder or be bummed, or something.

Whenever stuff involves money and people and opinions and is public,
there's a chance that something will be misconstrued, or
somehow...come off wrong. I hope this goes smoothly. Getcher pens and
checks and envelopes and stamps ready.

B,

Grant

Grant, Fantastic and very sane.  And how often have you been accused of the latter?  Best wishes and Merry Christmas, Steve

I have a set of Ritchie 172.5 triple cranks that I'm up to donate. If that works for Manny I'll ship.

Just a note on cranks for Bleriot (and not to rain on anyone's parade), I have a 51 frame and I switched out my 170s for 165s to eliminate some TCO.  Since the 49 is smaller, I would guess that 165 is a bit more optimum.  I realize that we're talking generously donated parts here.  Cheers and Merry Christmas to Manny and all, Steve
