I still haven't decided what I am going to do in regards to the brake levers (as you can tell by my wacked out cabling and lack of handlebar tape). I had STI's on LHT, and while I don't miss the intergated shifting, I do miss the nice hand position on top of the lever. I also think I may like the clean look of aero brakes better. Does anyone have a suggestion for some nice gum hooded aero brake leves that offer a nice top hand position?

The TRP's on the RBW site are pretty gorgeous -

But, you do end up having to get the drilled versions (more $'s) to
get the gum hoods.
Other than that, I haven't seen too many gum hooded levers around.
Particularly not featuring hidden cable routing.

Your Atlantis looks beautiful. Looks like all the contact points lined up for a good fit while keeping a nice Riv aesthetic. Be sure to update us with photos of it in the wild. 

As for gum hoods... I think Cane Creek makes an aero lever with gum hoods.

on tire size with the mini-motos. What size BAs did you use?

Great looking bike, but you could afford to trim a TON off your shift cable housing.

My favorite brakelever for your setup is the Tektro R200A.  The Cane Creek gum hoods fit that lever.  I stocked up on them when they were selling for under $20 a pair.  I bought gum hoods for about $8 a pair.  The reason I like the R200A is because I like a huge flat area from the ramps to the hoods, and these offer that.

I'd be really interested in hearing your comparison of ride quality of the LHT vs. Atlantis.  I have a Trucker but have always lusted after the Atlantis...The LHT rides like a tank and feels incredibly slow.  I can't imagine that I'd be able to manage over 8 mph with any kind of load on it.  Granted, a lot of that could be the engine, but would love to hear your insights of one versus the other.

Wow! I see very little space between those mini-motos and the tire. Perhaps that's an effect of the photo.

 

I love Paul Components's stuff in general. I sort of wish the mini-motos had been available when I was building up my first bike. They look so clean! And when I look around I see more choices in short-pull levers than in the long-pull levers required by my (full-sized) Motolites.

 

But I don't complain in general: the Motolites and my Paul Love Levers have been fantastic for me ever since I switched to using them. Very effective. Very confidence-inspiring. Very pretty, too, IMHO.

There really is VERY little space between the BA's and the mini moto's. Maybe a 1/4 inch...maybe. Actually, it is probably not really a long term solution, or even a safe option at that. It kind of bums me out a little to be honest. I really want to run those brown Big Apples, but it looks like I would have to run canti's to make it work. I am not a huge fan of canti's after having v-brakes with travel agents on my LHT. Maybe some one has a solution for me that allows me to keep the Big Apples and not have to revert to cantis. If not, I may be offering up an essentially brand new high polish Paul mini-moto for sale here.

 

All that said, I did get a chance to take the Atlantis out on a ride at lunch..I haven't been pitched over the bars as of yet.

Yowza and ppl are worried about fender clearance!  I dont have some love of any kind of brake setup, they all seemed adequate in terms of stopping for me but it seems if you have the scratch for Paul's than the neo retros look like the dogs bollocks of all canti brakes.

Unfortunately my tastes run richer than my wallet. This is how I ended up with the Paul mini-motos. The fact that I live in Chico, CA and ride over to the Paul warehouse doesn't help at all either. I do know a couple folks who work there, but so far the brotherly love has yet to come in the form of any deep discount.  ;)  So,  just don't think I can justify splurging on Paul cantis, when I have a couple of pairs of Shimano's on my bench. I can't imagine that the stopping power would be that much greater, and either way with canti's, i'd have to take them to the shop to be set up. I don't have 2 hours to fiddle on the set-up only to realize that I am a crap mechanic. ;)

Wowser!  That clearance is close!  I just ran out to see what it is on my Atlantis with 80 mm BMX brake & 40 mm tire.  It ain't much more.  I've got a full size Shimano V on order as my LBS didn't have silver.  Never thought about something getting jammed in there; glad my anal nature insisted on matching brakes now.  I was more worried about getting the noogle / cable thingie to clear the racks. 

 

If you have a pair of Shiimano Vs on the bench, you just need a pair of the Tektro RL520 long pull levers:

$30 plus shipping, direct from Tektro.  Mine came in less than a week.  They are a bit narrower than the model 200s I had before but a lot wider than Shimano's standard aero lever.  Black hoods only, I'm afraid. 

 

I kinda lusted after those Paul's for a while but the price is for someone in a higher tax bracket.  Now that the clearance issue has come up, it seems they are meant for CX or similar uses where maybe 35 mm tires are the max. 

 

BTW, that couple of hours of fiddling installing the brakes is good for the soul, and makes you appreciate why bike shops charge what they do.  I played musical brakes for a couple of weeks on a couple of bikes, but my billable rate is zero.

Wow, that's tight clearance!  Persoanlly i would not run it so close. 

Like Tom A. i have a pair of the TRP levers (mine are not on the bike yet), i would say this, yes they are nice, yes they are expensive.  from your post it sounds like the only reason you want to switch to aero levers is the look, honestly, the bike looks awesome, and anyone that would 'care' about the non-aero levers, would also not appreciate the atlantis anyway. 

if you're more of a function over form, and a realist (in terms of money) type person, why swap out the levers at all?

It's close, but if you're not running fenders, why not?  If you would like to change, maybe look at regular Shimano Deore V brakes.  Have them on my LHT which has 26" wheels and a fender.  It clears the fender about as much as your Pauls do without the fender. 

 

Cheap Tektros might also work. 

Glad to see V brakes on another Rivendell, have Vs on the Sam Hillborne and eventually on the SimpleOne.  (The parts are at my dealer, just have to get over there and pick them up.)

 

Oh, and your complete Atlantis looks pretty nice, too.

With the levers, it is actually a functional issue for me. My LHT, which I migrated from, had STI Levers. I really found myself using the nub on the top of the lever as a comfortable respite from the drops. I also found the shape to be something I prefer to the non aero levers on the Altantis.

 

Tracy- I really loved my LHT. But I did find it a bit of a tank. The Atlantis just plain rides differently. For lack of  better descriptors it is just smoother and more responsive, even with the big apples...I am sold on iot for sure.

I have a LHT also and want to switch to the Atlantis frame.......you might switch to mounting the Silver shifter to the down tube.....just take off the pods and the cable stops. It shortens and streamlines the shifter set up and makes the shifting the snappiest IMO. You'll find you won't be prone to shifting as much and the slight stretch to the lever (unless you have long arms) is good for you. Here is how I have mine set up.....I used the older Shimano plain brake levers they feel pretty nice to me but the ones currently from Riv (Tektro's) are probably nice too. I'd just buy new hoods and wrap the bar with some cotton. Do you think the Atlantis rides much differently than your Trucker did?

A) first thought was, if you're not going to run knobbies, are sticking w/ the smooth tread, then, maybe, it's okayish; but you could run the fender above the brake instead of under it;

B) but my better thought: why not run a regular Motolite v-brake, instead of the mini? It'd have loads more clearance...

When I first put the SKS on over the NeoMotos, I actually could look across the top of the tire still, but yes, it got closer as it passes under the v-brake's quick-release...  I've since brought the fender line in a bit from some of its earlier photos (one labeled "fendered"), to make it a more uniform curve. I've maximized the amount of clearance, putting the top of the fender right up under the Motolite's quick-release.  I can insert a finger in between the fender and the top of the tire, but I've not measured what the actual clearance is; I'll try to do that soon (don't know that it'll be tonight).   [Busy week, and, I've misplaced my calipers, have yet to figure out where I've stuck 'em.. but can measure it in other ways...]

Now, anytime I say anything about my fenders and the Neos, I feel that I need to make a disclaimer;   I cannot recommend to anyone to run knobbies under fenders...  I've not had any problems with mine, but, I have to say, these newer diaga-Bombadils have a lot more clearance than most any other one out there.   I keep meaning to pull the Neos and put the TourRides back on, but I just keep not doing it...   I really like the Neo's, but, I don't need them for daily wear, and, they're not the lightest tire out there either...

I'll report back w/ numbers, and put up some more pics...
