Hi,
I think the tire I'm looking for doesn't exist.
I had been using Panaracer Pasela TG 700x37's on my Hillborne for the better part of 2009 till last spring when I rebuilt the bike without fenders and with Schwalbe Marathon Dureme 50's!.  The tires are really too big for the Hillborne, but they do fit and there's about 5mm of clearance at the chain stays.  I'm rebuilding the Hillborne post new paint job as a fendered tourer again and need slightly smaller tires.

So, here's what I'm looking for:
A tire, like the Pasela, with a gum skin wall.
Something between 40mm and 50mm...ideally a true 45mm.
Something capable of most roads and trails.

Any suggestions?
 thanks
Jason

How about this?  http://www.flickr.com/photos/37542512@N04/6124570571/in/photostream  Good size, brown (not gum per se, but close) sidewall.

thanks for that,
do you know if they really measure out at 42mm?

No.  I could remount them on a spare rim and see what they measure, if you need an exact measurement.  I can tell you they were pretty cushy.

WOW...yep! I want the exact same tire for the Hilsen.

Like you, I have been running the Pasela TG 700x37.

I have even talked myself into liking the way all black tires look to open up the choices. So far the Marathon line up has been most promising, but it seems they have true measurements of under 40 then jump up to 50. Those are crazy expensive tires to "maybe" fit on the big end. I would run Big Apples if I could...but realistically, 42-44 would be sweet.

There is a tire being put out by J&B Importers under their house brand Origin8 that looks to be a Marathon sorta kinda look alike. Specs say it has a kevlar protection, folding bead, all black with reflective side stripe. 29x1.75 (44.4). I think they retail @ $24ea. I might try a set of those.

Still...I would rather dig on a set of Supremes in a 42ish.

Jason:

I measured a 50 mm Schwalbe Marathon Supreme at 46 mm actual, mounted
on a Mavic A 719 rim, at 50 psi. The 40 mm version of the same tire
measure 40 mm on the same rim. These are both black wall with the
reflective strip.

Continental tires typically run fairly narrow.... but why not ask the Continental USA Distributor, Highway Two. https://www.highwaytwo.com/

FWIW .... The Origin 8 tires jinxed mentioned are called Navig-8er 29r

Kenda has a new 700x45 tire called the Bitumen http://www.kendausa.com/en/home/bicycle/commuter/kwick-bitumen.aspx  I can't find any side photos but it's likely black. FWI .... I was a holdout for tan for the longest time, but after using some black tires I've grown to like them. No more grimey sidewalls!  I like Kenda tires ... I've used a 700x45mm Kwick Roller EZ(discontinued) for two years now and love them.

I've used those Contis in 559-47. Didn't much care for it. Too many
flats and didn't roll well.

I liked the 32-559 Sport Contact though.

YMMV
