OK, not really a hack event, but a number of devs at RCNZ mentioned they were interested in a trip back to gorgeous kiwiland in winter to hit the slopes and do some boarding/skiing/drinking.

I just wanted to get a show of hands on who is *seriously* interested in heading over a for a week (to maximize snow quality chances thinking the weekend of the 20th of July  and roughly 7-10 days).

Idea would be to rent a place(s) in Queenstown (if you've got connections there or in Wanaka or what have you, please give me a shout.). I'll also ask about some early deals if there is enough interest.

ciao !
Daryl.

I'd be down if we had internet.

I would also be down, that is if I'm allowed back in the country in 3 weeks...

I'm one of the people who'd like this to happen, but I don't know if I can afford to both go skiing in NZ and attend Sapporo Regional RubyKaigi 2012. I'll leave talking about the latter to another thread when I've conquered my jetlag - don't want to hijack your thread.

I've spent a month each year for the past couple of years working from Queenstown. We've been going for a bit longer so have had the luxury of buying season passes and renting an actual house.

Most of the higher quality holiday houses will have DSL connections (have a look at a friends company http://www.stayhere.co.nz/ ) and failing that the mobile carriers have pretty good mobile internets. 3 Degrees in particular is the cheapest and has coverage throughout Queenstown (but not through Wanaka last time I was there).

Queenstown is a brilliant place to have a good bit of working ski time, just don't hurt yourself.

That's awesome info Mike, thanks! (though I now hate you working for a month each year from Queenstown... =] ). Now I just have to try and convince my boss that working for a few weeks from Queenstown would be a good thing for the Institute.  =]

ciao !
Daryl.

I'm not sure if I'm going to actually head to NZ this year or not, but if I do (and although I'm not actually an instructor) I'd be happy to give people help learning how to snowboard.  I've taught a few people now and am getting reasonably good at it. It's the kind of thing that takes a couple of days to be able to then enjoy your time on the mountain.

I'm interested, but it'll be a month or two before I know for sure that I can commit to anything. I haven't been snowboarding for ages - it's an itch that needs to be scratched for sure.

From that site looks like the following are available end July to early August:

max 5 nights, sleeps 10 from 500/night => http://www.stayhere.co.nz/queenstown/aspen-house/
min 7 nights, sleeps 8 from 1000/night => http://www.stayhere.co.nz/queenstown/wintersun/
min 7 nights, sleeps 8 from 350/night => http://www.stayhere.co.nz/queenstown/1-goldleaf-hill/

I'm thinking dates around 29 Jul to 5 Aug... How many interested and wot's your budget. Pimp or backpacking?
