This is a  link to show how to add long polling to your python webapp with gevent. 
Still not very clear why, he uses redis. Look like long study session

Try take a look at
https://github.com/kagesenshi/radiate/blob/master/README.txt .. this
probably helps you better than implementing long polling

Very cool, tornado already implement a websocket. Which socket.io will use if browser support is there. 

Much to learn I indeed have
