Is there some way to show whitespace *only*, and not all special characters (like line endings)?

If there currently isn't, is it something that could be added to the 'to-do' list?  What I'm looking for is something like what Komodo Edit has - the dots for spaces are very subdued, not dark/bold so they show the spaces without pulling your attention away from the actual code.  Same thing with being able to see white space separately from other special chars.  Indent guides would be the cherry on top ;)

TIA,

Monte

I use Windows and don't have this problem,

You might try Edit => File Fornat.

Colin,

I don't think you understand.  The file format has (so far as I can tell) nothing to do with this.  I'm talking about when you specifically turn on 'Show special characters' in the preferences... under Tools -> Options -> Editor Options -> Options, or else clicking the button on the Editor toolbar (assuming you have that one enabled).

A number of popular contemporary editors such as gedit, geany, komodo edit, etc. have separate options for showing whitespace (spaces, tabs) and special character such as line endings/ carriage return.

Monte,

I don't think that what you are proposing would help much.

The only time where I've found that sort of thing useful is when people have left Tabs in their code.

I had assumed that your problem was associated with different codes for ending lines.
