Hi

I have just put puppet onto a new Ubuntu install and it ran a couple
of times but now I get
Execution of '/etc/puppet/etckeeper-commit-pre' returned 1:
whenever puppetd runs.

Grepping on etckeeper-commit turns up lots of posts to ubuntu and
debian forums about changes made in February.

Does anyone know what the story is? I've ended up with a screwed pam
configuration on the box and now can't change it because puppetd
fails.

I ran into same problem after installing puppet as gem on Ubuntu 10.04.
I don't know what's the purpose of '/etc/puppet/etckeeper-commit-pre' but at least such executable is not found in the file system.

Workaround for me was to comment out (#) the following lines in /etc/puppet/puppet.conf:
prerun_command=/etc/puppet/etckeeper-commit-pre
postrun_command=/etc/puppet/etckeeper-commit-post

Now puppet runs fine.

That is a package used to store /etc in git. Slightly redundant if you ask me

Ideally folks should bug report this sort of thing against the Ubuntu packages, otherwise they'll never know.
