I asked James Tauber about this recently, and he echoed that the
'group' space is indeed in flux, and there isn't an app to recommend
at the moment. The 'bridge' concept presented in django-groups is
important, but future work will probably not continue in that app.
Maybe some community effort to combine ideas from geonode groups,
django-groups and tribes is needed, so that soon, we will have one
group app which can support all things Pinax.
James said, "one thing we realized is that there are two very distinct
features":
1) something for managing *scope*
2) something for managing membership
Scope meaning, "basically what the bridge stuff is doing" in
django-groups. Membership options such as invitation only without
opt-on, invitation only with opt-in, request-to-join with approval
required, free-for-all, are required.
Also I suggest reading the post about pinax groups. It is from 2008,
but still relevant:
http://jtauber.com/blog/2008/11/09/groups_tribes_and_projects_in_pinax/
It would be great to hear what other developers, and especially the
Pinax devs, are expecting to have in the Pinax groups app. It would be
even better if activity began centering around one app.
best,
Tom
