Hello all,

I was talking with Amber a couple of weeks ago and she seemed REALLY busy, so rather than ask her when the next meetup might be I said: "Hey! Would you like me to organize the next meetup?"  and voila, here I am.

I'm thinking Wednesday March 21st but feel free to suggest other dates that week.

Please let me know if you have something you'd like to show.  I'll be showing off some d3 work I've been doing.

Thanks,
Ryan Miller

D3? *PERK* Yeah, can you do like a half and hour or so? I was never
happy with the "bunch of folks doing five minute ignite-style talks"
format.

I'm putting the finishing touches on some data journalism stuff -
trying to describe something magical and graphical in the confines of
an eInk Kindle. ;-) But I could easily do a visualization talk on data
journalism if people are interested.

March 21 works for me - what about a venue? Thetus?

Sounds neat Ed.

I'm working out the details on location.  We might be at the new ISITE office in NW.

Which I have yet to experience ... sounds great!

Incidentally - have you wandered by the new Wolfram|Alpha site yet?
They've just put up a "Pro" option that looks like a data geek's
heaven. They have a 14-day free trial, which I signed up for, of
course. I think in the end I won't subscribe - their "CDF" format and
tools are proprietary and that's a deal-breaker for me even at only
$4.99 a month.

The iSITE space was cool - saw it last night at CHIFOO. However it was packed and at least for me, the acoustics suffered (high hard ceiling, not much "soft stuff" up yet to tune sound for a big group). I'll go again but it pays to be in the speaker's line of sight.

What did folks think of Collective Agency?  I was at the last meeting there and thought it worked out quite well.

It could be kinda hard to hear in the back. Is there a PA system available?

The group is welcome to meet at Jive as well -
We have a large meeting area on the 5th floor overlooking Burnside.
I think PDX Javascript Admirers have met here in the past.

Collective Agency is great if there aren't hundreds of us. But I think
we'd have to pay them a small fee.

Jive works ... really, anything except a bar / restaurant / coffee
shop is fine with me.

Who do I talk to about using the space at Jive?

Ryan -

Let me check with the office manager to make sure there are no conflicts that day (Wed. March 21st). I'll send you email at your Thetus address.

I'm pretty impressed with Lanyrd after this weekend's experience with
#nodepdx. Any chance we can shift from Plancast to Lanyrd?

As a note, we used to have RefreshPDX meetings at Jive and they were great.

I just learned that the Greater Portland Pulse project is using Weave.
I'm thinking we should invite them to an April meeting. Any comments?

I'm going to have to pull my talk on Data Journalism with the eInk
Kindle. I've run into enough snags that it's just not worth pursuing
at this point. I'm in the process of migrating my code to EPUB and the
Nook Tablet, but that won't be ready by 21 March.

If anyone is interested, here's a survey about data visualization:

I can show the results during the meeting tonight.
