Hi Jim, et al.,

Amaru (ex. Joy, ex. Calliope) is located at Dinner Key in Coconut Grove. I
bought her two years ago from Dave Macintyre over in Cape Coral, FL. I
sailed her through the Florida Bay to Matecumbe Key and up to her new home
in Miami. She largely sails Biscayne Bay, although I have sailed her up
and back to Indiantown near Port St. Lucy. On the way up I nearly sank in
the gulf stream. We started taking on water though the shaft. Evidently
the stern tube around the shaft was made of two soldered pieces. It broke
apart . . . And for two days we bailed and limped in to port. A wax toilet
ring and duct tape stemmed much of the flow.

Currently Amaru is sidelined on her mooring after damages from Tropical
Storm Isaac. Their is a backing plate under the binnacle that has a block
for the steering cable that pulled free. Inspection of the plate showed it
to be quite rusty.

So far she has been fun and a lot of work. As far as myself, I was raised
with Catboats. I had a Marshall Sanderling at one point and then moved up
to a Hans Christian 38. I find that the Legnos Mystic 30 is just the right
compromise between the two. I am hoping to take Amaru over to the Bahamas
once I know her a bit better and get a number of projects completed on her.

Wow! I am adding the wax ring tomorrow!

Dave contributed to the group only a little, but I do remember he enlarged the prop aperture so he could put a large wheel on. Seems to me I saw a photo of it up on a lift too.

We've got some friends stopping there before going across. Keep a lookout for Chip & Tammy aboard IP 38 "Cara Mia" and Ray Townsend aboard Southern Cross 31 "Attitude". They raved about the place.

If you'd like to be an admin for the Facebook site let me know. Do you have any photos you'd like me to post now?

Jake,
I had stern tube problems about three or four years ago.  It had cracked where the bronze tube was brazed to the outer flange, and water was coming in pretty fast.  Fortunately, it was discovered at spring launching, not out off Montaulk Point or the Gulf Stream.  Had to get it repaired, and the shop got it out of alignment.  There was no way I could align the shaft, and I had to get it done over again.

It was an interesting experience. Luckily my crew was great and took it with aplomb.

Pete, I love the woodwork on Ladybug. What do you treat it with?

Jake,

I use Semco Teak Sealer, (oldtone shade.)  It needs to be re-done about twice a year, but is very easy to work with.  So easy, in fact, that my wife volunteers to do a lot of the application.  It's supposed to give you the look of freshly sanded teak, and works very well.  I've been using it for about 25 years now, in spite of the popular rush to that stuff that tries to look like varnish and turns the teak orange, Cetol.

I used Semco on my Hans Christian. It is very easy to work with! I hate the look of Cetol. The cormorants have decided to roost on my spreaders and have basically killed what remains of the Cetol, I was thinking Varnish, but I think I will go back to Semco. Here in So Fla, I think it will have to be applied be 3 or 4 times a year . . . But first I need to climb the mast and make the spreaders a little less hospitable.

Jake & Pete,

We used Semco but in our NC sun it would start going away in a couple of weeks and sometimes less. Very easy to work with. We abhorred Cetol because of the orange color, BUT(!) the new formula no longer uses rust for the coloring agent and it looks like varnish!

Try "Natural Teak" and see if you like it, we sure do. They name their product line in a very confusing way by calling it that, they should have just called it "Natural" as it adds very little to the color. It is holding up great too. We put it on in the early spring and it is still good except where we scratched it with a line or something. It will still darken over a few years, but NO MORE ORANGE!

After putting on three coats on the slats, we left it alone, however, on the boomkin and bowsprit we added 2 coats of gloss as per their instructions and those finishes are holding up great.

Jim -

I'd be happy to act as an admin on the FB group. Email me directly at jake
(a) naviger.com or search for naviger on FB.

If Cara Mia or Attitude need any local knowledge, feel free to forward my
e-mail address.

Dave kept her on a lift behind his home. I know he had changed out the
screw after discussions with Peter Legnos, but not much more than that.
