How would the list members feel if I auto forwarded the daily summary for mlo.uservoice.com to the list? The benefit would be giving feature requests and ideas greater visibility.

Add a Review feature

Posted in General

Without built-in support for a review process, some items stagnate, using views and filters in MLO to carry out a review can be a complex and frustrating undertaking, and that you don't know what has been reviewed and what hasn't.

The review process would be similar to adding reminders, but not intrusive. After talking to a friend who uses OmniFocus, this is the review process I have in mind:

1. A new "review" view would be added to the app.
2. When you add/process a new task, you set a review frequency (similar to setting up a recurring task--e.g., "second Monday of every month" or "1 week after the next time the task is checked off from the review"). The review frequency could also be set on a folder or context, just as other attributes can be set on a folder and inherited by child tasks.
3. The task does not show up in "review" until its next review date comes up.
4. Check the "review" view as often as you like; it will only show items for the current review.
5. You can update tasks in the review as necessary, or just check them off to show that you've reviewed them.

Future improvements:
1. Filter the review by priority, urgency, due date, context, project, folder, goal, etc.
2. When viewing/editing a task, show the user the last time that task was reviewed.

The killer feature of this type of review process is that it allows your reviews to be incremental, so you can do the review while waiting for the bus, standing in line at the grocery store, etc. Because you eventually review everything in the list, you don't have to worry about things being forgotten, no matter how many items you have. It also gives you the ability to easily prune duplicates and delete tasks that no longer should be in your system (e.g., an expired coupon from one of those online deal sites).

Of course, this feature would not force any particular workflow on anyone--just as you can choose whether or not to set recurrences, reminders and deadlines; you could choose whether or not to set a review frequency for each context, folder or task.

I have some ideas on how to abuse contexts and meta-tasks to perform reviews, but I don't think those ideas will scale very well.

Android: When zoomed into outline view, filter by context

I use this functionality regularly on MLO desktop - zoom in to a given branch in outline view, then switch to 'todo' view and filter by context.

This appears to be licking in MLO Android.

This appears to be incorporated! Well done MLO team! User Interface improvements will help to make this feature more accessible within the different views, without having to go back to the main menu.

Sounds okay to me...many casual readers here might not be following
the UserVoice RSS feed. In addition to increasing visibility, it also
might make people more likely to vote or make their own requests.

Perhaps I am a bit cynical, but what value has been delivered to the customer base by all of the democratic voting? Feel free to deliver the periodic emails regarding customer desires, but does this feed the bulldog? I suspect not.

It allows the developer to do a better cost-to-benefit analysis in
terms of effort vs. number of happy customers. Of the five ideas that
have been accepted, four are in the top five most popular requested
features (by vote).

Sorry to be contrary, but I really don't want this in my mail. I love
MLO and I think I gain a lot from the productivity and organization it
provides me. But when I consider the time I spend beta-testing and
reading and responding to the three forums I subscribe to, I'm not
sure it's a net gain, and it's on the verge of being a time-sucking
hobby. I can see where reading this daily summary would be useful, and
I am sincerely appreciative of those of you who spend the time to
cultivate this channel and encourage the people who contribute to it.
But I don't have the time. I think you should make it a separate
distribution, so that I would have the opportunity to unsubscribe.

I have to agree with Dwight...even for newsletters and such that I've signed up for, I rarely read anything that comes to me every day or even every week. I would prefer not to have a daily automated email.

But, that said, I do know how to set up a filter so as long as the pattern (subject line etc) predictable, I can filter it out.
