Dear All,

In as much as I welcomed the recent announcement about teacher's possessing a degree by 2020 (http://www.nst.com.my/top-news/degree-a-must-for-new-teachers-by-2020-1.91540), I could not stop myself thinking about teachers currently in service. I have received remarks from various sources (a Form 1 pupil, a 'junior' teacher [less than 2 yrs of service], and a former teacher who is now an educator at a local university) about teachers servicing in primary/secondary schools who do not have much interest in teaching. Now, my question is, What are the steps MOE has taken to overcome the issue of teachers not having the interest to teach? Or, should I re-phase the question and ask, How does MOE ensure every teacher maintain his/her interest in teaching?

As one of the stakeholders, I wouldn't want a teacher by name conveying text book contents to our young generation. If possible, I would want a teacher who are able to teach the contents of a text book and also apply his/her knowledge to teach beyond what's written in the said text book. It is good to learn that teachers are now getting a pay rise, it is good to learn that teachers will not have to wait in queue for a promotion in their career life, BUT it is not good to have uncommitted teachers in our Education System. How do you reckon we go about handling such issue? Would it be best to offer them to join the School Management Team (if such team is part of our new reformed Education System)? or, would it be best to coach them into becoming more dedicated in teaching? Would it work? Or, would it be best to ask them to evaluate themselves what are their best subjects and only allow teachers teach their subject interest (i.e. a Math teacher teaching Math and Add Math and not just English)?

What say you?

Regards,
Yasmin, PhD

Dear Dr Yasmin,
I am a teacher with passion....or should i say an ex-teacher with
passion on teaching.
I have to leave teaching line......simply because:
We are bombarded with too much unnecessary paper work, courses, and
projects that i dont see any value-added to myself and also students.

1. On Ko-K: When students are forced to take up 3 Ko-k activities,
there is little interest cultivated, but extra work added to teachers.
What is the meaning of having all the activities being evaluated with
points/marks? I still remember those days when we are free to choose
and would usually settle with 1 or 2 activities in school, there is so
much fun and leadership qualities cultivated.

2. On paper work:
- writing unnecessary and redundant Buku Rekod(now it is even worst
where teachers are told to write individual records for each period)
---- this looks real good on PAPER, but where is the crux of teaching?

3. On kursus(courses):
- Why spend money on makan and good hotel and most of all leave a
whole bunch of monkeys in the school unattended?
- The worst case is, all these courses doesnt really uplift a
teacher's profession. Most (and should i say ALL) are just held to
make up for the TEACHER TRAINING budget. I wouldnt say this is the MOE
problem but i would refer this to the job of the top notch leader of
Satu Malaysia!

4. On ever changing system
- Politics has been creating a hell of havoc to teachers! Every
political change it will bring to new things added to education and
none is taken away! If they are being changed, it is always under
personal interest and not for the whole nation.
- For example, the existence of 001 card, making PPSMI come and go,
SAPS and ePangkat came under poor tender project of software
development.
- My personal advice to all teachers involved in SAPS and ePangkat is
- BOYCOTT this! And get the software development team to key in the
info! That way they will understand how bad our nation's tender
project has become! If we were to dig further, may i know who is the
owner of the project? Please show your face and rectify this instead
of letting the teachers suffer for the mistake that one has been.
Otherwise, on hold the project first and let the team work out on the
software. Afterall, all the info has always been in hard copy.
- How can education improved? In my humble but firm opinion, please
make all the ministers and datuks children to study compulsory in
government school(not under any Yayasan or what not, but firmly only
Public school). Then only they will have better idea.
- Dont just do evaluation(pemantauan) like a big head walking around
and giving more jobs to others. Be a underground watchdog to the
system.

Here are just some of my notes.
I will put up more.

Thanks and best regards, Khoo

Dear All

It is very true that some teachers lack the passion for teaching.  I find this problem in every school and i must admit that the students of today are much knowledgeable and despise being humiliated.  With the current teaching problems, higher standards of education, parents are left with no choice but to send kids for tuition for them to cope with studies.  This does not actually bring much good to our young generation because a lot of their time is being utilized for studies and they are deprived of their childhood playtime in which area they get the opportunity to pick up good values and survival skills.

In the midst of educating our children, we must not deprive them of their childhood.

I think we new technologies, our children could grasp knowledge via easier methods, methods that both teacher and students could give their best.  When we achieve this, our kids no longer need to spend so much time on studies and we can actually make them also excel in sports which will yield discipline and activities to groom them in character.
