It would seem to me that developing some sort of comprehensive
"Wordpress Freelance List" in Minnesota would be awesome. I'm
continually running across clients and friends who need someone to do
various site-related (and other) tasks.

Case in point: A woman I know is seeking someone to connect with her
and do things like run the Wordpress site I helped her build (which,
by the way, isn't done yet). She's an amazing artist (does DNA-based
art...view her site) and has been on a bunch of science programs like
Ira Flatow's Science Friday on NPR.

If you know of anyone, let them know about this, OK? If you have
thoughts about that sort of directory or 'list', comment on that too.

Here's what she sent me:

Share an adventure with me, Lynn Fellman, in an art and science
project. I'm an independent multimedia artist with an art product
called "DNA Portrats". It is a product that people want to buy. But I
don't have time to show it and promote it! Take a look at the
preliminary site (click here). Learn more about me at my company site

What I am looking for:

• a digital artist looking to develop your skill and talent
• a designer with love of web design and an interest in writing and
marketing
• a social media thinker and planner to invent, strategize and
maintain social media campaign

Here is the plan: Start as an unpaid intern to finish my web site and
launch it with social media. Then stay onboard to design, illustrate
and market to make money with your talents. Contact me whether you
have some or all of these skills:

• Ability to work with Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop
• Assist in writing marketing messages
• Strategize promotions around social media
• Manage sales

Call or email and I will tell you more:

It's worth mentioning, in case others are looking for unpaid interns, that this probably does not meet the legal criteria for an unpaid internship.

There are 6 criteria under federal law. One of them is that "The employer that provides the training derives no immediate advantage from the activities of the intern, and on occasion its operations may actually be impeded." If an intern is being used in place of hiring someone, then it cannot be unpaid. It has to be for the benefit of the intern and not the employer to be an unpaid internship. It would strike me that this artist will derive an advantage, and that therefore this will not meet the Fair Labor Standards Act. She can find a volunteer, but I don't think she can find an unpaid intern in this case.

One good indicator, though not an only indicator, that an internship would be legal is if the student would earn academic credit for their work. That might be a way for her to get the work done if she could work with a school to meet this criteria for the student.

Does sound like a cool artist!

One could call the relationship by different names. It wouldn't have
to be called an internship. It could be a contract payable in the
future according to a certain scheme if certain criteria spelled out
in advance are met. Consultants often work with such contracts.

A WP freelancer list sounds like a great addition to the mspwordpress.com* website. I'm sure there's  a plugin of some kind for that.

Toby, I'd be willing to set something up if you trust me with site access ;-)

PS- How are we getting away with "wordpress" in the domain name?

Who cares what the government thinks as long as no one is getting
hurt? This sounds to me like people looking for mutually beneficial
relationships.

It seems to me that ll too often people use the term "intern" to mean "I don't want to pay you fair market value" under the guise of "gaining experience." I'm glad there are standards.

Take Care

Nick,
Let's chat about the form that this directory might take.  I have been wanting to do this for a while.

As for the domain, you raise great point.  I will work on moving the site to mspwp.com.

Toby, can you output the users of a BuddyPress group into a nice list with some metadata from their profiles. If the users could be queried by a group like that creating a "Pros" group might be an easy way to do that.

Yay, about time we got wordpress redirected to wp!

mspwp.com/wordup has a nice ring to it...

Good idea, Josh!  That should be doable.

I have the domain and cPanel ready to go!  Who wants to take on the task of migrating the site over?

Cool, are you going to move the site to a different host, or just change the domain name?

Couldn’t you just park the new domain on top of the old one, and change the URLs in the WP DB?

Darn it, Nick!  You and your common sense!!  That seems like it might be too easy.  Can anyone think of a harder way to do this?  haha!
