Extending Sync

I recently saw this "Ask Slashdot" article and it got me to thinking about secure, open and free options for robust file syncing. 
It maybe a matter of ignorance on my part, but if you asked me what file syncing solution would adequately fit that criteria, I could not tell you.
I know that a great deal of thought and effort was spent on making Weave/Firefox Sync meet high standards for its security (and other necessary syncing criteria).  I just thought I'd ask if it would be possible to easily enough extend the technology to be used for file syncing - something like Dropbox.
I'm not suggesting that Mozilla get in the file syncing business, but the Sync server has been released for free (and may be even more useful with Persona built in) and this was a great contribution to the open source ecosystem, one which people can easily implement and perhaps modify for other purposes.
I'm just thinking if it would be possible to build on the browser Sync to create file syncing for the masses, it would help the world to better control their data (one of our missions right?).  Right now I use file syncing for general files, music, and photos.  But in each case I give up many rights to my content and in all cases if the company decided to be Bad with my data (or just lose or delete it), they could.
This could also integrate well with B2G.
I'm not suggesting this be a part of Firefox, but I do think it's well within Mozilla's mission and right up our alley to secure and empower users.
