I have a png image with text on different parts which I would like to learn. Some of the text is on a diagonal.
I would like to cover over one text at a time, and insert it as the question on a card.

Can anyone recommend a free, simple program to cover or block out selected text -- particularly on the diagonal? Thanks.

As a kid, I always thought MS Paint worked pretty well for very simple
changes like 'add a block of black *here*'. If you're not on Window,
GNU Paint/gpaint is a faithful clone.

Thanks, Gwern. Paint met my need, though it's a bit awkward to use.
I'd still be interested in trying other recommendations, if people have them.

I would use Inkscape for the case where for each source image, you need to make multiple cards with different sections covered.
For example, you can:
1. Paste a map of Europe into Inkscape
2. Go to file -> Document Properties and click "Resize page to fit drawing"
3. Create a filled ellipse or other shape for hiding parts of the map
4. Drag the ellipse over a country
5. Go to file -> Export Bitmap and save the drawing as a new PNG image which can be added to Mnemosyne later
6. Then simply drag the existing ellipse over another country and go back to step 5, until you've exported a PNG for every country on the map.

It's a pity you can't simply copy the image to the clipboard from Inkscape and paste it directly into a card in Mnemosyne. That's one advantage Anki has with its very good multimedia support.

best of luck,
Oisín

I had the same challenge. For me the solution was to:
1) Paste  picture into MS-Powerpoint
2) Size up to make work easy
3) Cover up with numbered boxes that which I wanted to learn
4) Size down to Mnemosyne-friendly size
5) Screenshot the part I want with a snipper-tool ( I use SnagIt)
6) Save in desired format
(my attached example is learning the local geography of seas etc around Istanbul. 14k)

Thanks very much, Oisin, for both the recommendation and the suggested
workflow. I will try it. Inkscape sounds much more friendly that MS
Paint which, for example, won't allow me to resize or move the
blocking box to cover other text once I have made the first card.

Thanks, Henrik. The results look nice, so I'll keep that in mind for another option.

The fastest way for me is to create a text box with desired text in MS Publisher, create another text box or shape, fill it with colour and use this second box to cover up parts of the text. Publisher has the option to save the combined boxes as png. Once the pic has been saved it's easy to move the colour box or shape around in Publisher and save the next png.

Hi everyone, I have created an application for mnemosyne that does just what you described.
You only need one picture and it automatically places the box on the appropriate predefined location when the card is loaded in mnemosyne. Feel free to check it out:
