Hi,

If you're on Windows and you get crashes when exiting the 'add cards' dialog, please download 2.2a from our download section. It's a repackage of 2.2 with the latest version of the Qt library.

Cheers,

Peter

Good Evening.

Thank you.  I installed it and still cannot browse any cards.  I am installing Mnemosyne 2.2 on a different laptop.  How do I copy the default database files from the older laptop to the new laptop, please?

Best regards,

Ayesha

Hi,

Make sure to uninstall the old version before reinstalling the new one.

What is the exact error message you get?

As for transferring data between different computers, see
http://mnemosyne-proj.org/help/syncing

Cheers,

Peter

Good Morning,

Aha.  If I uninstall, does it delete the databases I created?  And I have the same error messages as before.

I read the synching link, which I did not understand at the point of "client configuration" because on the new laptop, it states "server NOT running"?  And I don't use dropbox.  Can I just copy the files to a jump drive and paste them into the folder on the new laptop?

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Ayesha

No, it won't.

Which you still haven't told me what they are :-)

Did you get any error messages in the previous steps, i.e. activating
the server on the old laptop? Did you copy the IP address given there?
Is Mnemosyne still running on the old laptop? Are you on the same
network, i.e. not behind a firewall?

Sure, but if you want to do that a lot, it's time-consuming and error
prone to copy files back and forth.

Peter

Alright - I unistalled and reinstalled 2,2 on the old laptop - and when opening the default database, and browse cards, I receive the same error message that I sent an image of before on December 7th.

However, I just re-read the synching instructions and figured it out - and it did successfully synch, except the formatting of the fonts (font name, size, color) did not seem to copy over; which I believe I will have to set up the card templates on the new laptop for the words to display correctly - seems easy enough.  And I can also browse the database on the new laptop!  :)

Now I can get back to work on setting up the remaining 5 units of Alif Baa and review.

Thank you again!

Sincerely,

Ayesha

Cheers,

Peter

Ah, I didn't realise you were still talking about that old error. As I
mailed you privately then, with your database files I could not
reproduce the error on my machine. So I'm not sure what caused it, but
I'm glad it's fixed now.

Yes, I still need to address this. However, if you change the
formatting after the initial sync, the settings will be synced across.

You're welcome!

Hi Mr. Peter,

It seems I forgot the username and password for synching between the two laptops.  What do you advise, please?  :S

Aha!  I found it, and will try it again.

And can I just copy/paste the new database for the Arabic word of the day to the new laptop Mnemosyne folder?

Or when I synch, is it only for the database that is open on the main computer?

Hmmm - I created a new database for 'Fushaah Word of the Day' and synched it from the silver to the slate laptop, and now I cannot browse cards on the slate laptop, which is the same problem I still have on the silver laptop.

Perhaps I should just import them into the default database and add tags?  And if I de-select certain types of cards in the browser, will it only review only those that are selected?  I hope my questions are clear.

I figured it out on the slate laptop - I just copied the new database to a USB drive, and then deleted it from the directory; and then un-installed and re-installed Mnemosyne 2.2a and now I can use the browser (on the slate laptop).  However, the silver laptop is still confused with the browser function, and I will try to uninstall and re-install Mnemosyne again, tomorrow morning.

Thank you for your patience!

Yes, the recommended way is putting everything in a single database,
and then use 'activate cards' and 'saved sets' to create virtual
databases. Much more flexible.

Peter

Alright.  I have another question, please.  Instead of using the Qur'anic Arabic text from the document, with the King Fahed Glorious Qur'an Printing Complex (KFGQPC) font for the Qur'aan, I am thinking about using these images of each ayah:

and then either copying/pasting the translation in the 'meaning' field, or I will try using a snapshot/copy of the word-for-word meanings found in these pdfs, although I am unsure how that will look:

m/resources/translations/english.html

At any rate, when I copied and pasted the ayah images, they appeared smaller than what I would like, is there a way to enlarge them in Mnemosyne by a percentage that I select, please?  Or would I have to enlarge it in another program and save it there, before using it in Mnemosyne?

What do you think? advise?

Hi,

You can play around with the sizes by editing the img tag, e.g.

<img src="foo.png" width="500">

Good Morning (or Afternoon),

Excellent!  Thank you very much!  These images will work for the time being, because the ayat (verses) are short for Juz 30 (last 37 suwar/chapters).  I will have to figure out what to do with other surahs that have many phrases or sentences in each ayah/verse, because I want to find a way to focus on the meaning each part of the ayah/verse.  For example:

I just used PicPick to select part of the image, but it won't enlarge in the field?  I will have to learn how to use this software, and play around with it - if you have any ideas, please let me know. I am just so excited to have found a different method to finally accomplish my overall goals!

And is there a way to center the image in the field, please?

Thank you!

Can't help you with PicPick, but as to centering the image, that should
happen by default (unless you changed the default alignment of field in
'card type appearance).

Cheers,

Peter

Thank you.

Another question.  I am entering 1 page per day from this book, and am also splitting the mp3 track into seperate soundclips:

http://press.georgetown.edu/book/languages/top-1300-words-understanding-media-arabic

and I am confused on whether I should have 2 or 3 words per card (singular, plural, etc.). as is listed in the book; or make separate entries for each individual word?

This is a quizlet list of the previous edition (http://press.georgetown.edu/book/languages/top-1000-words-understanding-media-arabic), and you can see that this list has have several words per 'card', as is printed in the book itself:

What do you think?

Thank you.

Yes, the recommended way is putting everything in a single

and then use 'activate cards' and 'saved sets' to create
        virtual
             databases. Much more flexible.

Hmmm - I created a new database for 'Fushaah Word of
        the Day'
                 and synched
it from the silver to the slate laptop, and now I
        cannot browse
                 cards on
the slate laptop, which is the same problem I still
        have on the
                 silver
                 laptop.

Perhaps I should just import them into the default
        database and
                 add tags?
And if I de-select certain types of cards in the
        browser, will
                 it only
review only those that are selected?  I hope my
        questions are clear.

                     word of the day
to the new laptop Mnemosyne folder?

Or when I synch, is it only for the database that

Ultimately, it's up you. Personally, I put the plural on the same card.

Thank you.  I looked at these that I have:

as well as this software program:

http://www.aucpress.com/p-3069-egyptian-arabic.aspx

and I suppose it is standard to list the forms together.

Also, does Mnemoysne have 'internal' margins for the fields/cards?  I ask because I realized that the ayah image that I save from:

is un-centered when attaching in Mnemosyne.  So, I decided to use the actual png files from:

and these particular ayat will center, but they appear on the card field in different sizes?  And then I tested the images in MS-Word, and they are fine, so I wonder why in Mnemosyne I have to adjust the 'width=?' to different sizes, and not just 500 for them to appear the same size from card to card?

Thank you.

BTW, this 500 was just an example :-)

It could be that you also need to explicitly specify a height="xxx" as
well as a width="xxx" to get consistent results. Of course, whether a
single set of w and h values will look good for all your pictures
depends very much on the pictures themselves.
